I 100% believe in utilizing minerals based on observation and studies that I've looked into. I do not like the commercial ones that I've looked into. Too much $, not what they need when they need it, or added sugars / sweetners that do nothing to promote dental health which many studies dictate as a key contributor to a buck reaching a mature age.

I mix my own with 2 parts trace mineral salt, 1 part stock salt and 1 part di-calcium phosphate (around $100 for 200 lbs of minerals). You can Google this mixture and read up on what the benefits are exactly for fawn, momma doe and bucks in particular.

I run 1 mineral location for every 60 acres. The 200 lbs gets me through a year with adding 10 lbs each month to each location starting in March and ending in September. Deer seem to be most active during green up until the end of green up.

There used to be a stump in this pic. After about 10 years deer have eaten it. That’s a 9 dollar tractor supply mineral block. All I ever use.

We use the trace mineral blocks too.
Deer and elk utilize them frequently.

I use the cheap trace mineral salt blocks or bags. The deer tear it up in the spring and summer. I started one lick about ten years ago and it's eight or ten feet across and about a foot deep. I pour a bag of mineral salt in it once a year in February or March.

I have put out all kinds of stuff just off a deer trail and never seen any of it used. They say deer will eat a hole in the ground and they don't step off the trail to it, much less eat a hole in the ground. Maybe there are to many cattle blocks left in the pastures.

I made a fancy mineral lick with about 200lbs of salts di-cal, etc, right next to the spot I've had a salt block forever. I also put a fresh salt block about 10' away to see which the deer preferred. Well, the $8 salt block won the battle, hardly any deer were interested in the mineral whatsoever. In fact, when the salt block was finally gone they dug a nice hole where the salt was and could care less about the minerals. Once I did a side by side comparison between a regular salt block and a trophy rock, the salt won again. Even tho the trophy rock is basically salt too. From my findings, I think the deer will use whatever option they are presented with. And regular salt seems to work better than anything I've tried.
