What are your recommendations and experiences?

2 year old lab , great retriever but high energy and is quick to run out of sight. I keep her in kennel mostly. Worked late today, kids let her out to play. She ventured over to my uncles house ( nearest neighbor ) , he brought her back but wasn’t too happy. I’m looking to keep her closer.

Bury a wire? Use a collar with a central unit with a radius? Chain and 55 gal barrel lol?

What’s your thoughts, thanks

Some dogs will fight an e-fence enough to get out but it will be enough to keep them from coming back in.

I didn’t want my dogs running off, affecting my deer / turkey hunting or getting hung up in a foot trap. Wife bought the unit that plugs in the house and has a radius around the unit. Came with 2 collars and marking flags. Walked the dogs around the perimeter every day for a week and then let them do what they were going to do. Both got lit up once and they never crossed the perimeter again. We don’t even have the unit plugged in anymore. If they have their collars on, they WILL NOT go across the perimeter. I physically take the collars off to get them to take a ride in the truck or to go for a long walk. Even with the unit off, they will physically pull back and not let you take them across the perimeter until they see their collars removed.

VERY effective.

Forgot to mention all the flags were removed within 2-3 weeks. They learn quickly that when the collar beeps, voltage is right behind it.

Ive been using Sport Dog collars for about 15 yrs. It5 was recommended by my trainer/breeder. They now have a combo collar that works with the invisible fence and as a training collar so you don't need to have to separate collars now.

Do not buy the garbage with the collars with the coin battery.

We had an Invisible Fence system for 20 years. We live on a busy road, so it was a life saver if we wanted a dog. Once dogs were trained, the fence did its job. Keep in mind they will keep your dog in but won't keep unwanted dogs out. We had a couple instances where a couple dogs came into our yard and piled on our dogs tearing them up. Once I thinned those out, we were very happy with the fence. I did the install myself, no idea if that's still an option or what the units cost these days.

We have the unit that plugs in and sets a radius.
It’s been a blessing and if i had to spend 500 dollars tomorrow on a new
one I would. It took about 2 days for the dog to figure out the perimeter.
Just have to remember to take it off when take the dog somewhere otherwise you feel really bad lol

We have been using a wireless fence for years and have had no problems keeping our dogs in. I think it is a pet safe. Eric

We have the petsafe transmitter and collars for our mt cut and aussie. They do not cross the fence. When my Mt Cur sees a coon or possum walking across the yard, he backs up from the circle how far he can range and couches down and lets them come. He waits for them to get about five or ten ft in the circle before he attacks

Which brand and Unit did you buy?

PetSafe - 3/4 acre radius. Looks like they're on sale.

I had a basset mix hound that lived inside of an underground wire. When I first led her to the hot wire for a taste of electricity, she was terrified. I assumed she had a firm grasp of what those flags meant, and would not go near them again. I stopped my training. Big mistake.

A year later I sold the unit to a friend with a money-back guarantee. He had two young Dalmations. A few months later, he returned it. A year later I sold it to a neighbor with the same guarantee, and again I bought it back.

The message here is: Read the manual twice and follow the instructions exactly.

That's been my experience with an underground fence too. They learn boundaries real fast.

My doctor suggested I start doing squats, so I moved all the beer to the bottom shelf of my fridge.

Jack Russell Terriers are known for that.

Put up a physical fence , they will dig under it.
Put up a invisible fence , they will learn to zoom through it quick and take the hit for freedom

It takes both types of fences to control a determined dog like a JRT.

I lived with two dobermann's once. They had a wire and a beep beep collar. They would walk across the yard and when it started beeping to warn them they would lay down and let it beep until the battery wore out, it would stop beeping, and they would stand up and go wherever they wanted to. Smart dogs. You got a Lab? You should be ok. lol. Just kidding. I couldn't pass that one up. Those Doberman's really did that though.

Not sure what collars would do that. The PetSafe gives a 2-3 second beep and then juice is flowing. The only way that a shock isn't forthcoming is if they clear the beeping by getting back into the safe zone. I'm sure if anyone is interested, they could read up on the specs online.

Guys who run dogs would know way better than me, but seems like the tone followed by a bad result is a powerful tool. I've seen guys 'tone' their rabbit dogs who didn't want to come to them. The tone or beep worked by itself and the shock punishment didn't need to occur. Same thing I've seen with my house dogs.

The one we had beeped when you started getting close and then zapped when it got too close just like you said. They would just lay down at the beep range. This was in 2000, I'm sure there are all different kinds now.
