Here's some interesting input on the subject. It will give you a few things to consider that you might haven't thought of before. One being; hard-cast lead bullets rather than expanding.

My go to for bear repellent with Black Bears is a short barreled 12 gauge pump with buckshot and slugs. 8 rounds with lots of horsepower at close range.
I have nothing clever to put here.

A 45 acp with solids would work but I'd forego the hollow points. I personally carry a 40 S&W with underwood 200 grainers. Nothing will stop a bear in it's tracks unless it is brained or spined.

I carry hard cast 200gr underwood or Buffalo bore in my 10mm and my daughter carries a Glock 357 sig with hard cast solids. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a black bear with either one. Bears are a tough critter and follow the old African montra of heavy hard bullets for breaking bone. A lot of folks carry 454 and 480s here but we do have a large Grizzly population. 45 ACP use a heavy bullet but slow and not a lot of Penetration.

I carry a 1911 but converted to 460 Rowland in a chest holster. But my main Bear gun is a Wilson combat 458 socom . It puts a wallop on them. But I am dealing with grizzly most the time . Had 4 on bait last check. 45 acp with hard cast would work . Not the best choice but bears are pretty easy to kill in less there adrenaline is pumping

I stopped a charging wounded black bear once with a 44 mag. The head shot as it was coming broke the bridge of his nose over to one side. He didn't want to bite me anymore. Still had to put a brain box shot to finish him.
I would think a 45 acp might have trouble penetrating thick hide. I used to have a gold cup edition as well.
I skinned a six foot plus black once, that was shot with a 41 mag and the bullet stuck to the corner of the bottom jaw. It did not crack or chip the jaw, just stuck. The bullet was in pretty good shape and was bent more then mushroomed. Penetration was less than a inch. From the way it looked, I wonder if it didn't knock him out is all and they killed him gutting. He could have been dead, but maybe not.

X2 Or slugs & birdshot. Don't underestimate birdshot at close range. Taking out the eyes & blinding a bear can be just as good when it comes to surviving an attack. BUT use two slugs to try & stop it first. A third shot can be slug or birdshot....
TILL THAT DAY.....

there is a growing amount of data from cops dealing with bear as well as others that 9, 40, 45 work reasonably well. definitely better than nothing , sure a 12ga or a 308 would be better but they are a LOT more to carry as well. When you make things inconvenient to carry they are more likely to get left in camp.
