Good to use around farm places if yotes are around the yotes avoid humans more the fox tolerate people more. I've caught quite a few in cages 14X14X36

I just set. Of course I have mostly greys, and they tend to not be overly shy of cages.Thank you.

I use carp for cage bait nothing that won’t go for carp the only extra thing I do is wedge the back when I can between some brush to keep it from getting rolled over once a critter gets caught. A fox won’t fight a cage much like a coon will.

Not sure about Reds but my son catches Grays in his all the time. Only bait he ever uses is an egg. Even foot holds and a dirt hole, egg down the hole. Contrary to what we can smell, an egg gives off an odor.
And these cages are just set at random intersections or near creek drains.

Never caught a Red in a cage trap. Had one of them coyote cage traps from TSC baited and set for an entire year and they would not go in it. Urinated on it. Slept on top of it during the day. Dug underneath it but would not so much as stick their head in it. Some of it was comical.

Caught a gray fox in a coon bucket once. Very heavy rain that night. Wonder if it was seeking a dry spot. Bucket was baited with a fish and located near a marsh.

To me a cage trap for an adult red fox is a very low percentage trap. Yes I have caught some, but when you look at trap nights per fox it will tell you something. Fox pups will go in them more often than adults.

I used cages in the sheep where dogs were killing lambs and ewes, covered the bottom with grass Derricks Rocky Mtn. Call, tied a flashy garland to the top of the door, just was was easy to check, caught several reds and one sheepkiller. Have since used this set up on problem fox with a lot of running dogs and people who don't care for their dogs, get a day rate and per critter. The customer will get tired in a hurry paying for his neighbors dogs in my traps I use the Cam-trip cage. Load them up and take them to the local animal shelter. The first place they call when a dog goes missing and they charge to get them out. If they don’t call the shelter will take care of the issue.

I have caught fox in cage traps around some farmer's barns. As stated above, i always put dirt to cover the bottom of trap, making sure door closing is not affected. Have caught mostly greys but a few reds also. My bait is usually a chicken carcass or animal parts supplied by the farmers. I do not camouflage trap but stake it solid with "T" stakes

I used to follow the chicken forums and they tend to get their share of predator problems. I'd guess 99% of them use cage traps for the simplicity of it, and sentiment they want to catch and release. Not smart, but that is the sentiment.
Anyway, despite all efforts, not 1 in a 1000 is going to catch a fox in a cage trap. The one exception was a lady that posted a video of her catching a red fox in a cage trap. What she did was to put a live bird in it's own cage, then butted the cage trap to it, end to end. Then covered bird cage and cage trap with a tarp, and then blended both in with brush. Created a cubby / tunnel with the only way in thru the cage trap door. Fox could see, hear and smell the bird, but only way to get to it was thru the cage door. Video showed fox circling several times, but eventually rushing in to grab the live bird, only to get caught in the cage. Bird not happy, but otherwise unharmed.
