Boss, I've taken down hundreds of nests in my time and I've yet to be stung by a bald faced hornet. Once by a european hornet but they tend to do that when you take a hammer to the tree they are in.

Hornets are pushovers, yellow jackets on the other hand are nasty.

Get up on the ladder with a ball bat, and swing for the cheap seats !!!

Wear a para-sail chute or wingsuit rigged so you can bail out quickly afterwards !!!

Make sure you have an Epi-Pen on hand just in case for the odd sting.

Wear a go-pro camera so you can document your adventure for youtube !!! laugh

Attacked 2 nest in similar situation first sprayed with Spectracide wasp and hornet spray, the foam nearly melted the nest followed up next day with Raid wasp and hornet spray nothing remained alive.
Spray early in the AM or after dark when the majority of hornets are in the nest and lethargic from the cooler temps

Get in there with a stick and a beer can full of kerosene if you’re any kind of man at all lol

…. I had one of those big euro hornets fly in the truck window the other day and hit me a couple times… felt like I was going through electroshock therapy

.. I’m sure I deserved it but dang I felt it for days

Insert profound nonsense here

Great Stuff expandable foam. Seal the hole right quick, then stick the nozzle through the sides of the nest in several locations. It will entume them. If any of them try to come out the holes, they will glue themselves in place.

That doesn’t always work(if you want to kill them). It usually works to get them to vacate. I’ve used a can( and BTW, think they advertise it sprays 20’), and soaked the entire bottom of the nest around the hole. They simply eat out a hole in the top and escape. But still makes for a nice display, if you hang from ceiling, because you can’t see the hole. 😂

Back in 2022, I used the recipe shared here and totally eradicated the yellow jackets and hornets on our farm.

I used .6cc of Navigator SC In 2 cans of tuna. I drained the tuna water. Mixed the Navigator SC into the water. Mixed the treated water back into the tuna and put 1 can of bait in each of the 3 trees. I wish I started using it years ago.

I'm not sure where you are in Ohio, but if you want to make a trip over near Mechanicsburg, I'll give you enough Navigator SC to get the job done.

Paul, I use the 3 can method for immediate annihilation.
Late, during the cool of the night set up lighting away from where you will be attacking from (them buggers if any get away will go for the lights). All three cans of the 25 ft wasp and hornet spray need to be the expensive ones, the cheap cans just knock them down but don't seem to kill em effectively. If you're expert with a pistol you won't need additional sight; if not, a ghost ring mounted to two of the cans may help lol. Inject both cans (one in each hand) into the hive opening and don't stop til they're empty. This is where the third can comes in, withdraw from your back pocket and saturate any part of the hive that is left or any soldiers still wandering around in a daze with extreme prejudice.
If I recall, I was using Black Flag brand.

For a more passive, wait them out approach, follow KeithC 's approach. It works also over about 4 days. Destroys wasps, hornets, and those difficult to get ground dwelling yellow jackets, but doesn't attract the nectar based pollinators. It has to be in a enclosure (cage) to prevent birds and rodents from reaching to get the chicken.

So I’m with my dad one day in the pickup on a back road and he spots one of those nests on a small branch close to the ground. He says I want that nest. Come on he says, he makes a plug with a small stick and some leaves walked up and plugged the hole and cut the branch with his pocket knife. We head to truck and he lays the nest gently in back and then pulls the plug. He says jump in. With a dazed look on my face I said now what do we do? He said drive around til all the bees come out.

Starting fluid ( ether ) is my weapon of choice. Once you commence spraying you can’t quit no matter what ! It will make them drunker than an Irish taxi driver. When they are laying on the ground stomp on them. Rubber bands around the pants leg is a plus !

They get really mad once hungover so make sure job is complete !

Be sure and save some for seed. Instead of hearing the "bleating of the sheep" you can hear the "buzzing of the bees", lol.

My wife and was going to a church we had never been to and I stopped at a guys house to ask directions. Him and his daughter was standing looking at their king cab truck like it was going to explode. He said not to come any closer. He and his daughter had been out cutting wood and cut down a tree with a nest in it. She wanted it so they put it in the back seat. It was dead winter and on the way home with the heater running full blast them bees got warmed up and woke from a deep sleep and were not happy.
I talked to him a few months later, he said they decided from then on that the scorched earth policy was the best policy, lol.

My neighbor has a similar situation. He waited till evening and disconnected the electric to the lights. He has a hot water pressure washer that he could reduce the pressure on the wand. He set the heat as high as it would go and adjusted the pressure just so the spray would hit the opening. As the hornets came, it could be said "they were in hot water".
