Pic of field with leaning tree in the middle will be put in cerial rye in Sept.
2 pics of pumpkin plots. They have exploded in the past 2 days!!.

Just sent my buddy some winter greens mix to plant down in MO we have been testing different options as it’s one big gravel pit in his area. Above ground plants did well this year we stay away from radishes and turnips for obvious reasons with the rocky soil. The rain was a huge help this year we had growth beyond our expectations.

He said the local bought clover did very well this year down there I’ll head down after archery elk to do archery deer and see how it looks.

Jerry, bout the only thing I've seen do decent in gravely/ sand soils is rye and oats.
Red clover can do ok with good rains.
What's in the mix?

Not sure what mix he did he gets the cover at the local feed and seed. I sent him some no plow and now winter greens mix he just had the one place opened up last year with a dozer very little top soil over the gravel so getting a good first plot was a nice surprise. We did the soil testing as we knew we were at a disadvantage with limited top soil. If not for the frequent rains it might of been another story.

I've never tried it .

Not sure what you’re asking bnb? Do I usually plant this late?

crimping Rye. I've heard of planting using that method but never tried it.

Thanks WannaBe.

Works great on anything tall. Buckwheat especially. I’ve found that the buckwheat will generally die off, whereas rye our wheat should still get sprayed as it some can stand back up. If you’re shooting for any no till or drilling, crimping works really well for me.

You guys planting cereal grains this early is crazy to me. I’m assuming it’s because of your expected first frost date up North. If I had any grains in the ground this early, they’d be too woody or stemmy for the deer to be on. Our first frost date is generally in November.

I generally shoot to have grains, brassicas and clover done by the 2nd week in Sept and it all times out well for ML season in Nov. For bow in Oct, you have a hard time pulling deer off of the planted agricultural beans or acorns if we have them.

Oats were planted in the back yard.
I'll keep them mowed short until a week before expected frost .
But, yeah, normally oats and rye go in early/ mid Sept. Lol.
Thanks.

bnb You should plant a patch of Sainfoin. I planted it 15 years ago across the road and it is still there. Not as thick as it was, but enough it draws deer and I hay it every year way before it goes to seed. I see way more deer now that it is there. It does well in about any soil. .

If you didn't need the hay from it let it stand and go to seed. Go in and knock the seed out and cut it just before snowfall and scratch the surface with a harrow. Sainfoin reseeds itself if you can let it stand. Good stuff for hay country out west.

My brother in law in MT has quite a bit of it. They put it and leave some out to keep the deer out of the fenced hay they feed. If you do a search, it talks about food plots with it. Plant a little strip and see what happens.
