So, in all the years with woodstoves I have never seen such a thing. If anyone has had one can I take out the baffle board and install a damper? Maybe it will be better to leave it in I have know idea. Lol

No clue always used a damper once you get it tuned it’s pretty smooth.

There is this board on top inside of stove that has air gaps around it to let smoke go up chimney, The chimney hole is completely blocked with this board. Lol

Sounds like a creosote dream to me, open up the damper and tapping on the pipe is an easy clean out.

Mine has a shelf about 2 inches from the top, and from the back sticks out about half way, all the way across the firebox. Doesn’t affect draw any.

That is interesting and then you don't need a damper, right?? I might try it for a while and see how it works with the baffle board

Is that something that insulated pipe can handle that regular pipe can’t? My boiler has a wavy top to the fire box on it.

I welded up a stove and put one in to try and trap heat in the stove. The back of the top has a small gap and a larger one up front. The pipe comes out in front of the back gap. I put a piece of 3 x 3" angle across on the top just in front of the stove pipe to try and trap heat up front. I have to run a damper in the pipe. Wind direction make a big difference how it draws. It has a 24x36" fire box and 11 two inch heat exchange tubes with a 20" box fan blowing through them that kicks on and off about 190 degrees. I made it out of a old fuel oil tank. The oval shaped ones. I cut it down and put a piece of flat on top. It is thin, but heats up in minutes. I am scared to fill it with wood. It may get hotter than I want. I try to run it at 300-500 degrees is all. If I hear the fan kick off I know it is time to add wood.

I have a couple of Quadra-Fires. They have a thick steel shelf that comes within about two inches of the front of the firebox. There is a thick Kaowool insulating blanket over the shelf. The idea is to direct the majority of the heat out the front through the glass door.

Quadra-Fires are designed to use a six-inch chimney and no damper.

They were rated the cleanest-burning, non-catalytic wood stoves for several years.

Depends on the design of the stove. Some stoves they are necessary to keep smoke from igniting and making stove huff and puff and blow smoke out the front draft.

I have a disc damper in my flue, I wouldn't use mine without it.
