Anyone paid for one? If someone was to go cheap as possible how much? Have a person I know that is struggling financial wise and had a brother pass. I know she is going to go as cheap as she can to have him cremated. What might she need roughly?

Costs vary from area to area . Contact a local Cremation Society and check on state benifits. Basic bare bones cremations usually start at about $900. Add any mandatory state requirement/fees and order more than enough death certificates. Budget 1500.

Brother in law has a funeral home and I’ve handle more than I care to

$2000 here for the wife. That was arranged and paid for a few years ago. That includes pick up upon passing, transportation to the creamatory and a small cardboard box upon pickup of the remains.

My mom passed in 2015 at the age of 100. In the 1970s she decided she did not want an expensive service. She was a diehard Duke basketball fan and she made arrangements with their med school to donate her body upon her death. Eventually, her body went to a closer university med school. There were zero charges for the funeral home that handled her body, no transportation cost, and when her body was no longer needed, her cremated remains were delivered to me at no cost. Before the beginning of every anatomy class, a student said a prayer for those who directed their bodies to medical science. It made me feel good.

I asked the university about a pledge for my body. The chairman said I was too large for petite female med students to handle. They wanted people no heavier than about 165 pounds.

If your family member meets the requirements of a nearby medical school, this is the least expensive option I know of.

I've seen billboards around the KC area advertising getting bbq'd for $900ish IIRC.

State requirements vary but I know my mom when she worked hospice helped a family meet one for casket by using an actual cardboard box, I have no memory of the costs when I lost my 2nd wife 10 years ago. But to be honest I don't remember anything till fall when I got on here and started trapping.

Thanks for the info.all. This Monday a co-worker/employee did not arrive at his shift time of 3 p.m.. This was highly odd for him not to call in. Sent someone to his apartment when he did not answer his phone. His truck was there and a fedex package was in front of his door.. Asked local police to do a check. When they forced themselves into building they found him dead. He was a great guy and co-worker. Took a couple days for the police to find next of kin. She stopped by today to say thank you for caring enough to call the police instead of waiting and assuming he just quit. Asked if she was having a service (employees want to attend) and she said she will be lucky to be able to pay for cremation. Thinking I may step in and help. Crap week for sure. But not as crappy as hers. Thanks again everyone.

IN Misssouri:
Use of an OVERPRICED funeral home is not required. Call the crematorium for your area directly. Cost will be close to the SS benefits, and they will PU the remains too. When my Mom died she wanted an as cheap as possible funeral. so that's what we did, Even had a "Coupon" from the back of the phone book. We called it "The sign from God" LOL

She originally wanted to go to science, but they turned her down as being too old if you can believe it!

Spot on. Don't send them to a funeral home.

A funeral home is just a middle man between the death and grave. Cut them out of the equation and save money. I got a friend that had a family memeber pass. They wanted a viewing. Had the body embalmed then cremated. $5000. Just put me on a brush pile with some diesel and let me burn.

go shopping in the area you live in , call a few places if you can tell them what hospital or morgue the body is at they should be able to give you a price.

also ask the hospital if they have anyplace they use when people can't afford to use other funeral homes.

you may want to stay in the county of death a friend passed in May I have a friend from boy scouts that runs a funeral home , he was able to do it , but 300 extra to send the paperwork from one county to the next , literally the funeral home is 1.1 miles north of the county line. and less than a 20 minute drive from the hospital where they passed.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

In the US, states are legally required to pay for the cost of cremation, if the family can't afford it, or a burial, if the families religion doesn't allow cremation.

This Michigan government website should be able to help your friend.

Best price around here was around $750 last time I checked

I am sure that there are additional charges for a service, container, etc

I donated my body to science, an anatomical donation. When I die they (Boonshoft School of Medicine) comes and gets my body. They haul me to their campus, cut me up and study me, then they burn me up and give the ashes to my kids. All for no charge.
