we can't bait deer in WI or do much of anything that would concentrate them besides building suburbs and no hunting refuges.

if I was going to shell out a buck a pound for deer mineral
I would think real serious about a similar mineral product that is 30 cents a pound and get 2 bags.

330 - I mix my own. WAY cheaper than anything outside of just a plain salt or mineral salt compressed block. I've had very little success with the typical livestock blocks that a lot of folks use.

I've also read a pile of studies that claim that additional minerals, calcium, etc., don't do much for you.

All that said, I've had a pile of attraction with 2 parts sodium chloride (table salt), 1 part di-calcium phosphate and 1 part trace mineral salt. If the other materials other than salt isn't doing anything physically for the deer, it seems that attraction wise they really seem to hit it better. I run 2 sites on 170 acres and go through 200 lbs / year.

Sorry I didn't answer your specific question, but i haven't found any commercially sold deer minerals that i didn't think I could offer my own mix for and not meet what they had listed and do it way cheaper.

I think it was the Di cal phosphate was the one I couldn't find last year

Kelly Harris Mineral recipe from Bowstie.. He passed from Cancer great guy many swear by this. Best of luck,

"I always buy 50 lbs bag of dicalcium phosphate, 50 lbs bag of trace mineral salt, bag of powdered molasses. I dig a 3 ft hole wide and about 18 inches deep. I chop up the dirt really good, shovel in the ingredients with dirt 1 shovel full at a time. I mix it up really good and keep doing it until the hole is filled back up.

The only reason I would push back on the molasses or any sugars is I have read a ton of studies that dental health is one of the biggest factors to deer health. That and sandy soils in Ag country. I know a lot of mixes add in sweet attractants, but I've seen a ton of info that it can cause cavities and leads to early mortality rates. Maybe not something to worry about in your area if there isn't wide spread management practices.

330 - The Di-Cal Phosphate is available in most rural feed stores around me. Not sure where you've tried looking.

September 1st - 1st Saturday in January it is illegal.

I use it purely to ensure my place has minerals during the summer. From my experience, with game cameras on both mineral sites, they quit hitting it when the beans brown out (mid Sept) and don’t start back on it until late March or early April green up.

I guess if someone was going to write me a citation for not digging it back out of the ground during the months stated above, I’d eat the violation. Pretty sure I could show them all of my permanent stand placements on the farm and how none are within 400 yds or so.

Deer here love these. Also, mineral and such like made for deer are almost always overpriced so buy it from livestock brands not deer hunting brands.

Litterly just buy an 8 dollar 50 pound bag of trace mineral salts and dump them on a stump that is rotting and close to the ground and boom they will eat the freaking stump out of the ground and lick the ground around it

TrapperE, that’s the way we do it. Usually with a small stream close by.

GUNNLEG, I have no problem with it, my feelings are it’s your property and you can do what you want. I just hate how we are limited on what we can do in VA. It’s ok to sit on a unharvested/harvested corn field to hunt, but I can’t put out mineral/bait/ attractant to hunt over. It just blows my mind some of the game laws we have. Couple county’s border me you can’t but mineral or feed out any time of the year. Eric

I get it my friend. I maintain 7 foodplots that I plant specifically to hunt, but I can’t bring in bait. I can plant a sunflower field and shoot doves over a ton of seed, but if I dump a cup full out of a bag, I can be FEDERALLY indicted.

I try to give back more than I take and go with the flow (law) the best I can.

Back to the mineral sites, I can’t speak for outside of VA, but I’ve not seen where it’s an attractant during hunting season. I just don’t see the usage once deer transition to hard mast and away from the green browse and beans. Maybe it serves as an attractant in other parts of the country during that time?
