Had 7 bucks this morning come through. 5 stopped at a popple tree I cut and placed for a rubbing post last week.

Nice pictures Dave. Is that a block of wood on it? Is that 330's new stand?

Just dug a hole 2' deep with a post hole auger.
Had to drive a bit East to find popple trees. Don't have any close by.

Been doing it for years.. fun watching bucks shred them.
Will post more as season progresses.

No scent.

Edge of one of my clover fields. 10 yards shot out a metal 12' ladderstend. wink

I missed him last year at 20 yards. Don't know how?
He's not got a big rack but he's a bully. I watched him chase off several nice 3_4 year old bucks.

I'll shoot him in a heartbeat. I want him gone.

Awesome idea.... I wonder if it would work where we have popple trees all over?

Yep it will

It's just has to " stand out" visually wise.

I've done it with basswood, cottonwood, pine, spruce, cedar.

I like popple for it's white bark and we don't have that here.
Just pick a tree that your area bucks like to rub, put it in a location where it's near a travel route and have it easily visible.
Wired/ tied to a tree that exists also works fine iffn ya don't wanna dig a hole.

Yep. Season is on. I don't like to sit this early. Years ago, I'd bowhunt 60+ days a year. I've mellowed out big time.
October 25ish is go time. I'd hate to tag out early and miss the real fun.

I stuck a camera on a rub tree and that was an interesting watch. Everything from some nice bucks to does used it. Had a spike take up 4 30sec videos just giving it everything he had. And yeah I said does too. A couple old gals came up sniffed it and rubbed their HooHa on it, lol.

The fact that he's feeding morning and evening in that kill plot, during shooting hours is great motivation to figure out an intercept point between bedding and the plot. What's planted in there? He even indicates what direction he is traveling- exciting stuff!

Down here they’ll pick a tree and rub it every year until it dies, sounds crazy but you’ve heard of community scrapes? Down here I call these community rubs. When that tree eventually dies, they pick another tree and start the process all over again.
It takes a bit of walking to find them, but the easiest thing to look for is the other trees they’ve rubbed until they’re dead. They generally pick another close by and these are usually on travel routes.

330, yes, I screwed an oak branch to it for a licking branch. Some deer are using it but not as many as expected.
Eagleye. It's on the edge of a ladino clover plot. It's tucked up right next to a bedding sanctuary.
He's Purdy active as he was last year. He's a bully and I want him gone.

WB, there are several rubs back in the bedding area that have got so much use over the years, they die. Mostly Basswood.

Been waiting for him to show up.
Disappointed in that he didn't add much inches (if at all) from last year.

New bucks are starting to filter in.

Thinking about giving this a whirl just to goof around a bit.

Appreciate ya. I've messed around with hanging thick vines for scent posts and getting them to lay scrapes where I wanted, but never a rub tree. Think I'll mess with one.

I put one in two days ago...added the camera and OAK branch a day later.

Digging the hole in that dry sandy soil was almost impossible but I got it done.

I have never put a camera on them but have had hundreds of trees absolutely destroyed from elk & deer. All it takes is planting a sapling anywhere and it will get hit.

For me it is a problem, may be interesting to see the big game that hit them though.

I put water tanks out at each end of a tree planting. Hard to compete with the saplings, but life at the water cooler has been epic [Linked Image]

Scott. What kind of tree did you place?
Snowy, I quite planting trees here. They get destroyed.
Could cage them but I don't want to look at that.

Mrs Langley, yep, as 330 said. Not planted to grow. Just a cut off tree species deer like to rub and placed for a rubbing post.
Cool Pic Randy. Now that crops/ weeds/ browse are drying down, the deer are HAMMERING my water tanks.
Glad you like the pics TD. smile

Here is a pic from him last year.
Kinda neat to see them small bumps on his left base actually grew a bit.
His rubs should be easy to identify.

I like antlers with those knarly bumps and kickers on the bases. I did some euro mounts on some a few years ago. Absolutely crazy!

Sucks when they don’t put much antler growth on the next year eh! I just had a couple bucks show up again from last year and both of them appear to be smaller!! Darn shame! But oh well.

Bucks, that new buck looks like he’s got 6 on that one side?

My buck I really wanted to see showed up and already broke his G1. I really think his antlers were bigger last year but we wanted to see what one more year would produce.
It’s all good though, he an old mature buck.

Great thread and pics bnb.

WB - great looking buck. Mine have been hitting horns hard the last week and a half. The buck you posted reminds me a lot of one we called stickers that one of my son’s took. My wife had found its sheds in the same food plot for 2 years straight.

I have 2 stands within 25 yards of this trail.
This buck really didn't grow much from last year. He's a mature buck although not a big rack.
A couple younger looking bucks have show up lately that have potential to turn into nicer racked buck.
I think I'll take him if I can.
He's kinda consistent. smile [Linked Image]

I can’t get this dude to break his pattern. Turned down several opportunities over this cold front, but I just can’t booger this guy out of the area. Racking a 80’ string of pines that are thigh thick and coming into brassicas the last week or so. Shows up 45 min late and back to bedding by 0430. Believe he’s bedding within 125 yds of where I’m hunting. Hoping a stanky butt will make him slip up in time.

Gunnleg. Some bucks are just wired different.
We can have the best cover/ food ect but each buck is independent in what they do.

The wider looking 8 pt in the beginning of this thread was ALL over last year during daylight and he is again this year.
Have also got several years of bucks that never got a pic of in daylight but lots at night.
.
I hope you get him!

MnMan.
Lots of new bucks showing up. They usually do this time of year.

Winds here were 30 and up to 40mph most of the day. I watched a small buck following 2 fawn literally walk right through a leaf tornado bout an hour ago.
Seen 9 bucks this evening. Even with the trees whipping and leaves blowing, they were acting completely normal.
As for hunting, I prefer thick cover and very seldom hunt a field edge. This evening just reinforced why.

Actually Mrs L.
I will shoot him just because he really didn't put on much antler growth from last year. many years of watching bucks age tells me he likes won't grow much from what he is next year.
He's a good bodied sized deer and I'm guessing he's a 5 year old.

It's raining now but supposed to quit about 5 p.m.
If that happens, I may go plop my butt in a tree for the first time this season.
I'd rather shoot the buck (first on shown on page one ) as he's a bully. I just want him gone.
Will see how this evening pans out.

I need to go check my cameras. I haven't had the time for a couple of weeks. More than likely the batteries are all dead anyway.

What kind of cams Rob?

As long as the cams are set on a trail (not a feed pile), I can usually get a Sept through December time out of them.
Got several different brands.

I have never set out a trail camera. I bought two once and have never put batteries in them. My wife took the moose picture out the window of the car. I was driving.

Yes and no. On years when the neighbors have corn planted I get the "Satellite bucks" working around the corn. That corner of the property is the place to be. On years when they have other crops planted, then the bucks hang closer to the house and apple tree plots. I just hate hunting on the front 40.

He sure has a morning routine down tight.

He's heading into a thick bedding area.

Not sure how he exits it in the evening. I " think" I know but I'm not going back there to figger it out.
Will wait till conditions are right, slip in the and hunt. I have one ladderstand tight to the riverbank. I'm guessing that's where he exits in the eve.

I haven't seen a Pope&Young buck yet on my place. It is very unusual not to see 140 to 150 class but not this year. No moose either. I haven't even hunted yet, so many out of state hunters it is unreal. Alabama to Mn and all states in between I have seen here and some neighbor's places lease to the southern and eastern people. That makes it pretty tough for a local in the middle of that hard hunting which takes place.

Good Luck!

Great Pictures MJM!!!!

Based on 99% of the numerous pics of the same deer he’s nocturnal. Good luck killing him. Of course when the rut starts all bets are off on his patterns go out the window. Next pic you post of the same deer is you beside him.

He's not " nocturnal" anymore.

Actually, he moves quite a bit during daylight.

I ran cameras today and just had small 8's or smaller. I did have 3 different diaper eaters on 3 different cameras, one of which ripped my 30 pound propane tank off the mount and chewed the hose off. Another left about 3 pounds on undigested corn on the bottom step of one stand. I think there should be a bounty on these things. I hate them!

Doug. Now days, yep.

I really don't give much of a rip if I kill a big buck ( not really, but sorta).
This is just a fun thing I've been doing for years.

I'd been experimenting with the " rubbing" post things for several years but never Nailed down the right technique.
Always used the wrong kind of tree.
Wasn't till about 8/ 10 years ago, I was working for a Muskie fishing old buddy of yours from S.D. (
DP)
I was out in his pasture one day and seen a cedar fence post that had been " hour glassed" by bucks rubbing it for years. Fence line no longer used and asked if I could take it with me. Yep.
I pulled it and brought it back to Mn and dug it in. Didn't get touched.
That became my obsession with finding something that would work.
Posted what I did on several hunting forum and now seems like Everyone is doing it! Lol.

Hate to say it, but I feel the same way. If I do it will be with a bow, but if I don’t it’s ok too. I do love getting pics though. Just seeing what’s out there. I killed what I consider a very nice buck a few years ago and it’s like ok, I’m done. Shot a management buck and “need” to shoot some more, but I’m just no longer “obsessed” with it. The thrill of seeing them and then learning them is enough it seems. Like Swamp mentioned in a post, our season opened September 14 and I’ve sat maybe 2 mornings and about 3 evenings. In previous years it would be all day every weekend and about 3-4 evenings during the week.
Instead of wanting “bigger” after what I consider my once in a lifetime buck, I’m satisfied. I’ll still go, and if one of the bigger bucks show up and present a shot I’ll send an arrow, but I’d almost rather put someone who’s put in the time for a big buck on one of the ones I’ve patterned. We’ve got a 6pt that is 225 or more and I’ll definitely need help dragging and loading that joker if I shoot. Got a 9pt that’s almost as heavy as he is. Then I’ve got a couple that “may” hit the 150” mark. I’m afraid if the Split buck isn’t killed this year, next years rack will not be anywhere close if he even lives. He takes the rut seriously and looks rough at the end of season. Heck even though my son just shot a huge buck, I’ve tried to get him to come shoot one of them just to say he’s shot over 300” in a season…he’s like me. Let’s put Zac, CJ, or Kayla on one of them.
I know some don’t understand trail cams and think we have tame deer and that’s ok too. Not everyone understands the actual work that goes into following a particular deer through the years. Killing “a” deer down here is about like shooting squirrels, anyone can do it, even on public land. But, finding that “one” buck that has potential and learning him is a whole different level of hunting. It takes a little skill almost everyone possesses, but what most lack is patience on that release or trigger, lol.
Great pics and deer man, keep posting them!!

Y’all can keep them things. Swamp has them over near where he stays in the State and I hope they stay over there. Been invited on a few bear hunts but have zero desire to kill one. Definitely don’t want them where I trap.

I wish it were legal to shoot them on sight here. They are constantly chewing the green treated lumber on the deer stands, breaking windows and eating propane hoses. I can't imagine the guy with the corn field has much good to say about them either. There should be a bounty on every one of them!

Great thread,he's not a inches deer for score, but thats just a number.By looking at his body he looks like 4.5,5.5 year old buck, you have the history on him so you know. He's mature and a good looking deer even though he won't score well, who care's about his inches.Good luck, look forward to a picture of you and him on the ground. No mature bucks on camera yet here at the house.

I'm guessing he's a5 year old Rick.
I don't think he will grow much for inches if he lives longer. He didn't much from last year.

May as well take him out.

Just watched him work over a different tree I can see from the back window.
Seen a few does come out and they were acting " flirty".
I had a feeling he'd be popping up shortly.
Got this pic and a minute later he was in view. Dang.. so fun to watch him trying to impress the girls. The way they danced around him I'd say he did a good job.

This thread got me all excited to go check my cams.

One I forgot to turn on. DOH!!!!

One the strap got chewed on by what I'm guessing was a porkie. Only got pics of the ground.

The other 2 I ran out of time and couldn't get to. I'll go check them in the next week or so.

Been there, done that...
Have made every mistake over the years placing cams.
I replace the straps that come with cams with wire now.
So much easier and faster to set up.

In fact, thanks for the reminder. It's a tidbit bit I feel I need to share.

Thanks for looking/ contributing.

cool

Not sure yet JP.

I'm guessing if I get a shot, I'll take him. I don't want him around (or the first buck on page one).
I just don't think either will get bigger next year and they will start bullying younger bucks away.
Will see.

He was in the pumpkins 4/5 days ago rubbing a cedar tree.
I've watched him rub that same tree now for 3 years.
He's really a handsome buck.

So much easier and faster to set up.

In fact, thanks for the reminder. It's a tidbit bit I feel I need to share.

Thanks for looking/ contributing.

Sat 2 hours this evening.
Was a great sit. See 19 deer and all came within 30 yards.
He just came out of bedding area now.

BNB,

Talk to me about your pumpkin plot. I’ve seen others rib ya on it, but I’d like to see how you roll. It’s certainly not a typical plot choice for VA, but I’d be curious of your take on it. Always looking to change up my plots from just clovers and brassicas.

If messaging is easier, that’s cool too.

Gunnleg. Pumpkins have been my # 1 foodplots for years.
Especially for late season.
They devour them!

They eat all varieties I've tried but seem to prefer the smaller sugar pie ones the best.
Easy/ cheap to grow. They do need a fair bit of moisture to do real well though.
Here are my 2 plots this year. Deer have eaten about 1/2 of what was there.

And yeah, that's another rubbing pole in the one pic. 24 yards from my deck. grin

The green (1st pic) was brassicas. They are about gone now. 2 weeks ago they were 2' high.
Brown stuff is soybean chaff that blew in off the field during a 60mph blow. laugh

Try punching in pumpkin food plot in the search bar. I believe I've done a tutorial on how I do them.
If that don't work, I'll go through it all again. Just ask.

I plant around Labor Day in Va to take advantage of mid Oct - Nov.

How far ahead are you getting these in (60 days, 90 days…?).

Mixing anything in? Cereal Rye, wheat?

Sorry to hear that. It's not uncommon to see 3-6 different bucks a day here. Does are almost always a given. I used to keep stats on my hunts and my kids' hunts. Believe that we carried around >80% success rate on having deer in range on hunts.

I see a lot of back and forth about 'deer management' on here. We're simply able to pass on a lot of deer due to density of deer.

BNB, fathom what?

High deer densities or number of bucks? Your posted pics seem to indicate that you have the same densities.
