Ever since somebody mentioned it on Tman the other day, I have been watching the betting odds on the election. It's more interesting than the dramatic news coverage and nonsense of the candidates themselves.

Anyone else watching the election through the eyes of Vegas? Anyone put any money on it?

I'm not a gambler and really don't understand what goes into it but still find it fascinating.

Vegas isn't always right, but it is for sure unbiased, unlike polls. People making bets are putting their money where their mouth is. You have Democrats voting on Republicans to win and vice versa. All classes of people bet, from the poor to the extremely wealthy.

I'd have to disagree with that characterization of "unbiased".
While the bookies may be closer to unbiased.......the gamblers certainly aren't.....in general.
These markets can and have been drastically wrong over the years.

Also, it is very likely that the various campaigns may be betting heavily one way or the other in an attempt to manipulate the odds and thus sentiment.....that might translate into votes.

I spent an afternoon with a bookie once. He told me he makes his money off the juice. He gets 10% either way. The purpose of the odds is to balance out the winners and losers so he breaks even......except for the juice. Bookie got the odds he gave his betters from odds makers in Vegas.

Last time I checked........a $100 bet on Trump would net you $53. A $100 bet on Harris would net you $130........or some such number. Gamblers were favoring Trump and they had to boost the payoff that much to get gamblers to switch to Harris, so as to balance the books to break even. Or at least that is how I understand it.

Just like the bid/ask spread on a stock. Market maker makes money either way

When I say they are unbiased, I mean the person making the bet, not the oddsmakers. No one makes a bet to intentionally lose money. Conversely, I don't believe people are always honest when they give answers to poll, as there's no consequence to lying.

I agree with you about people lying to pollsters. But I also think there is likely a lot of confirmation bias involved in the betting

Our local small-town attorney here is a perfect example. A brilliant guy but has and will vote D all his life no matter who it is.
