Wondering what other kind of good spots are to set traps.

Like I know crop change fence row and compost piles are good but any other spots? I know where trails connect are good too

Scout as much as you can and try to find actual sign. Tracks, droppings, etc. Any place where woods roads cross or any place a woods road enters a field can be good. They tend to like over-grown field areas too

TILL THAT DAY.....

where ever you find sign. Scouting is part of trapping. Coyote will show you where to set. Best teachers is the target animals themselves.

Didn't u have a spot the farmer dumps his dead livestock on the property you trap? If you do ill guarantee every coyote and fox within miles comes to that spot once or twice a month at the very least.

Can you snare or set cable restraints in fencelines? Is it legal in your state?

That's where I caught that first coyote. No action since tho.

Cable restraints are not in season yet

When I set up grass seed fields I like the highest spot in the field. Not sure what type of fields you have. Anyplace there is sign. Time to slow down and be observant.

There's more to coyote trapping than being on location. As I stated if it's a regular spot the farmer dumps dead livestock every coyote and fox farther than u would believe knows of it and comes through and checks it out. Now all you have to do is figure how to catch as many of them as you can. That's part of becoming a coyote trapper.

Wish my parents would let me go farther. Once I find spots that work is when it becomes easy.

It's also all about timing too.

When setting close to carcasses, quiet often coyotes will ovoid your sets.
Sometimes you can back of a couple hundred yards and catch them on the approach.
Use a different set . A urine bost - gland lure set ect.

Sometimes difficult to get to is worthwhile. Other times difficult to get to is more hassle than its worth and your time is better invested someplace else. Here difficult to get to and not being worth the effort = spot that is likely to bury truck to frame. Might not be concern in your case though

Its so hard to describe sometimes, but the way my mentor taught me was to pull over to the side of the road and ask me what I see. Of coarse it starts corn field, hay,.... but after so many repetitive stops, I learned to see the natural swales, subtle rises, brush line with a little Point" sticking out. Well, that was starting when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Years later, I developed an odd skill of looking at a lake map and seeing the topo lines as a field. Steep banks, flat, hills and so on. Its viewing the terrain as a predator. If you were stalking up on something, or using thermals to let you smell, where would you go? Like mentioned above, scouting cant be beat. But isolating where you scout will save you a tone of time. When you view pictures of someone's success, don't just look at the coyote of fox. You need to see the contour of the land, where the set was placed, and you'll understand how that critter approached the set.

One other thing he always asked me was why a coyote or wolf would never run a particular fence line or which side. I gradually learned to see which came from occupied houses/barns and which just seperated pastures and properties.

I don't try very much to pull them any distance. But when I do, its substantial visual aids. If I make a walk-through set between rocks, the rocks are volley ball sized and in the open - not hidden by brush. Same for logs, hay bails, pee sticks, and my new favorite little kiddy swimming pools/water tanks. Identify high percentage areas that would have mice nests that you can see from a ways away. I'm sure after a rain or snow, you'll see tracks that passed by. Possibly stopped and smelled to see if dinner is home. It took me a while to figure out why the yotes like my water tanks so much. Every time I refill, I dump them out and 1/2 doz or so of mice come running out from beneath. All in the details
