Can't be any worse than the increases we've seen the last 4 years.

Can't be any worse than the increases we've seen the last 4 years. Yes it can. Prices are already high. Tariffs will make them higher. Gotta start somewhere. Doing nothing is worse.

The biggest hole in our national defense is our complete inability to manufacture even the simplest goods. Clothes, boots, steel. On top of that we dont manufacture key components of all the electronic stuff we depend so heavily on.
I saw from the catbird seat (semi truck) as Gary Pittsburg and Cleveland came apart. Saw The produce and citrus producers in CA and FL disappear. Watched much of the west expand beyond its ability to water itself for no apparent, to me, reason for such exponential growth.
We dont need Chinese goods. We didnt buy them 50-60-70 years ago. The country was prosperous. The rest of the world envied us. Walmart the number one purveyor of Chineseium, originally sold only US manufactured stuff. Sam Walton made money and prices were not awful. He put KMart and Gibson out of business by offering better goods and better customer service.
The time is near that Walmart will be toppled the same way KMart was.

What’s everyone thoughts on having tariffs placed on goods from Mexico, Canada and China?
It will be interesting to see what goods get the tariffs placed on them or maybe all imports from these countries will have tariffs imposed.
I certainly am not looking forward to having to pay more for my fresh produce or every thing we get from China.
Your thoughts. Will they work? It's dumb and it's going to raise the price of most of what we buy. Trump is an idiot, not a single clue in his head. Enjoy the higher prices!

Hard to compare 2024 to 1954 with regards to what the typical American needs as far as goods. I'm all for Made in the USA, but we may want to dip our toe in the tech manufacturing biz before we tell China to pack sand. At least blow the dust off some of the rusted up cities full of closed down abandoned plants first. Maybe rustle up a few workers too. Ones that will work for wages that allow us to knock out products that aren't ridiculous.

Rustling up a few workers is a no brainer. End unemployment compensation and cash/grocery programs. Put thieves in jail again.

Good article bowhunter. Unfortunately the TDS crowd won't read or comprehend any of it. I wonder if prices will increase anywhere near the huge increases we saw due to "supply chain interruptions" during the fake covid crises years? Asking for a friend. I suspect the new Trump tariffs will have the same negligible effect on consumer goods prices as seen during the first round of Trump tariffs.

Seems like the starting point of some tough negotiations to me ! Something the last administration was incapable of at any level !
First step in getting cost of living reduced is to manipulate fuel prices. Transportation costs have skyrocketed probably the single largest contributing factor.
You don’t reduce fuel prices by shutting down the most efficient transportation system of oil available on day 1. And you don’t try and cripple domestic oil production.

The article is a good read. I do wonder, though, do the same global attitudes and ideals exist today as they did when the article was written in 2020. I am not an economist or have a good grasp of international trade but, it seems to me, if every trading partner wants to get more bang for their buck (which is their job) at the expense of its citizens, I don't see where trade will be considered "fair" by all parties.
  Everyone will need to compromise.
