I will be trapping a decent sized marsh next season out of an 1448 Jon boat and I was going to try and set some floats but I have Had no luck with a float ever. I was wondering if there’s a better spot than others to put them. I read or heard a while ago someone was making floats just with foam, is this possible? If not, I would like to know how and what you make them out of. Thanks

******* I save my sick days, because come winter, I'm gonna have a bad case of trappin fever *******

If you have never had any luck with floats. why use them.
I have never had any luck using floats either. Set the feed beds and the toilets and if there are any huts set them.

only time I used floats, is in deep water, and they work great, but in shallow water, the rats have to many places they can go,

In fall a good food lure helps a lot, in spring a good rat gland lure helps. I’ve got many rat floats I’ve had to replace the boards where I pour my lure as they have eaten all the way thru.
Don’t hurt to add a little wet vegetation as well, make it look like a feedbed.

Floats need to be on the edge or they don’t work. Or close to the bank. If you leave the float to far out the rat will swim between your float and the edge. When you see rats they are usually swimming on the edge of something. Could be a big pile of floating debris. Set the edges and try to avoid entanglement below your floats.

Interesting very few rats here but i've seen scat on logs from various critters and often seen encouragement for water trappers to set every log they come to kind of a float Maybe under a bridge for travelers would be helpful But as beav says if there are feedbeds and such why carry lumber
