I took two twenty pound bottles in and got them filled. One took 4.2 gallons and the other 5.1 gallons. I get home and the tank that took 5.1 gallons acts like it has no pressure in it. It is heavier then the other, you can tell lifting it. Don't the new bottles have a automatic shut off if they are tipped? Could the shut off be activated due to being over full? If you open the valve nothing comes out. Any ideas??

If its the new style fitting, I'd guess your not getting the valve to open.
Tighten whatever you're hooking to it some more.

I am 100% sure it is the automatic shut off valve is tripped due to being over full. I looked it up on line and it said they will trip if over full. It said to reset the valve too un hook what ever you are hook too with everything shut off and re hook and open the valve on the task slow to let it build pressure in the line going to the burner.

I have messed with quite a few propane bottles and know what you were referring too. You have to compress a spring loaded valve so it knows you are hooked up for it to release propane. I have even backed the cover for the screen on the regulator out to get them to work. That cover is what compresses the guts in the tank valve. I bled a little off with the set screw. It is for my fish house heater and don't really want it inside since it is over full and bleeding off LP.

Yep, that's what I was referring to.
I only have one with the new valve. When my buddy stops selling propane and I have to go elsewhere, I'll probably have to get new valves or tanks.

I recently was given a #5 that they couldn’t fill. It acted like it was full but obviously wasn’t. After several days of contemplating I took it out in the frozen yard and slammed it on the base straight up and down. Evidently the OPD was stuck as the next filling attempt was successful !
I have had #20 that seem to slam shut when you open valve. If you shut them off and wait 3-4 minutes and turn on propane equipment and then slowly open the #20 they take off. Open the valve to fast they slam shut.
Never use to happen until the government got involved with the OPD !

Yep, that's what I was referring to.
I only have one with the new valve. When my buddy stops selling propane and I have to go elsewhere, I'll probably have to get new valves or tanks. When they refused to refill the old valves here I took them to a convenient store that had propane exchange. They give you a tank with the new valve on it and you only pay a couple more dollars than a refill.

I remember hearing that the newer valves should not be cranked all the way open or they could shut down.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
