I have a Boykin Spaniel that finds white tail deer sheds for me It took about 20 minutes of training until she knew what I wanted her to do It sure does increase the number of sheds that we find Having her nose locating them is far better than my eyes could ever do .

You guys with the shed-hunting dogs, do your dogs also hunt?

I tried, unsuccessfully, to train two of my labs to hunt sheds. They are both upland bird hunters and that seems to be their primary focus when we are out in the woods and fields.

Even when I don't have a long gun or blaze orange hunting gear, they just want to hunt for birds.

How do you sell? I have a pile of whitetail but would cost a fortune to ship.

It only took about an hour to train Feisty, an AKC lab. She's not very big, about 55 pounds, but full of spark and boundless energy, eager to please. She also fetches waterfowl. Pretty amazing to see her swim in with a swan. She's also our bear dog for the church youth camp. Great around kids.

That's quite the dog! How did you ever train her to do that?

Had her 4 years now. When she was one, I found a little antler. I threw it out in snow so she couldn't track me to it, and when she found it, I made a big to do about it, praising her and giving her jerky. Then she watched my son find several more hidden in the snow, every time he did, I praised him like he was a dog, and gave him jerky... she was so envious, when we hid some more, she made sure she found them first. We trained her to find by smell and by sight.

I let her keep that first antler she found, she chewed it to a nubbin.

The biggest shed I've found. Was tracking a wolverine in a ground blizzard, led me right to it.

I have a mt cur squirrel and coon tree dog. My wife shot a deer and we were having a difficult time finding blood. She kept asking me to go home and get the dog and I kept telling her I didnt want to mess him up trailing a deer. She said it was a good deer and I finally agreed - went home and got the dog - put him on what little blood we had found - he went about 20 yards and found a drop of blood about two feet up on the side of a big oak tree. He immediately started barking treed and would not leave. I put his leash on, drug him away from the tree, thanked him - and took him home. We did find the deer after a tough trailing job.
