We own it. It’s public land.
Do we really though?

It’s not “your” land.
I don’t know where people got this notion the fact you’re (sometimes) allowed to trespass on that land for certain reasons makes it “theirs”.
Go build a house on “your” land. See how far you get.
Heck I can’t even hunt on “my” land here without an additional special use permit!

If sold would these lands not be on the tax base then? I have stated this before we used to give land to settlers to develop, why not do this now? Because then they become private and an asset to a smaller number of folks to utilize and enjoy…..likely rich and select folks. And you know they’ll play the shell game and NOT likely actually pay taxes. I guess in your opinion then, you better call your senators and tell them to push this through and liquidate all the public lands for “settlers”. They are actually doing this in the guise of “affordable housing”! They ain’t fooling me! Happy trapping! ScottW You are an over energetic rear end! Shut up you hurt your believed cause!

To those who won’t be calling, that’s fine. Or if you want to encourage the liquidation that’s your prerogative and it’s a free country. I just want folks to be aware of what’s happening and really think bout the pros and cons and what matters to you now and in the future.
As is mentioned by others here and in the podcast episode I posted, they could easily generate MUCH more revenue from grazers, mineral, and such……but they have chosen not too. It’s just more crooked politics from every angle. They’re even talking about prioritizing divesting in the “checkerboard” lands….ie, the large tract owners who are losing out by the corner crossing case rulings will be trying to get particular chunks sold off to further limit access.
Trappingthomas, not sure if you’re serious or what but I’m sorry if I said something to truly upset you. I reread everything I wrote and don’t think I crossed the line by any means in any way. If you’re mad I encouraged someone to give their opinion even though it differs from mine, well I guess that is a bit of hurting my “believed cause”, but if their mind is made up ain’t no sense in me beating a dead horse. I may be a bit of an eager beaver at times, but sometimes I just can’t help myself but get worked up when I think it’s worth the energy.
Boone, the Federal land are much more “mine” than Ted Turners or any other mega tract holders whether they be for conservation or development purposes. So it’s kind of all about perspective to a point.
As far as the Texas and ND examples, I’ve always said we should only be drilling enough to keep the market honest and reasonable and sit on our resources as much as possible.
I know it’s not perfect and nearly everything has pros and cons…….but at least be aware of the situations and fight for what you think is best and make your voice heard. Happy trapping! ScottW

Public land is one of the single greatest achievements this nation has ever accomplished. The ability to go where I want, when I want, hunt, fish, trap free of charge, asking no one for permission, on the lands that surround me are an experience that is unique in this world. I’ve been to the states that have very little public land and have no desire to live in area that restricts my movement and ability to recreate on the lands that much. Anyone supporting the sale or transfer of federal public land has no concept of the amount of freedom this jeapordizes in a country where freedom is already dwindling by the day. I have and will continue to urgently ask my senators to remove this language from the reconciliation bill. Fortunately Idaho has a representative who has already strongly opposed these efforts in the house. And if you read into the details, they’re exempting Montana lands from this whole deal in an attempt to keep the votes of the two Montana senators. They won’t say that, but that’s the reality. Happy trapping! ScottW

Scott, I won't be calling.
I don't think the federal government should own as much as they do. Wouldn't privitizing public land be something conservative free market people support?
Who is John Galt?

Scott, I won't be calling.
I don't think the federal government should own as much as they do. Wouldn't privitizing public land be something conservative free market people support? I think Steve was just saying He surely won’t be calling and giving support as I suggested though he might call and give a vote of support. BC, I’m actually surprised you feel that way knowing your general train of thought on things, but it’s a good example of a person actually thinking logically about a situation and drawing a logical conclusion. Rash and short sighted is I believe a very accurate description. I will say, I’m not against very logistical sales of property adjacent to cities for true affordable housing and such. Just not the shenanigans in play and to such a ridiculous level! I do think many senators will be thinking loooooong and hard about this as they are likely very aware of the level of unhappiness they might get from constituents in the future. Happy trapping! All federal lands will eventually be off-limits to human habitation. It's already happening. The video shows you the future of federal lands. The less land the feds own the better! JMO! Habitation or use? Very different things. Granted, usability will in all likelihood slowly diminish over time. But limited recreational use is better than no access period for the general public in my opinion. Happy trapping! ScottW

I don't like it, but can understand some being sold.
With a growing population, we need more energy and raw materials.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.
