Good service gets a good tip, poor service gets a basic tip, it's that simple if my glass goes dry that is a strike against them but I don't penalize them if it takes longer than normal for the food to arrive that is on the kitchen staff not the server. I also tip my mechanic as he doesn't own the shop where he works and does a great job, and for some reason when I have a problem with a vehicle, he is able to get me right in.

Their tip is based on their service. As mentioned above The better the service, the better the tip will be.
Very rarely do I leave less than 20%, unless the service is terrible.

If I have to stand to order, there's not going to be a tip. But we don't eat at those places very often unless it's a mom and pops burger joint. In which case I do tip.

If the cost of the meal goes up and you tip as a percentage then the tip goes up. I don't understand why the percentage should go up. Appears most of us tip according to service and not always as a percentage.
If I tip well it's because I want the person to remember me. More likely to get good, maybe preferential, service next time.

In my quest to catch all nine of the worlds billfish, I spent quite a few days on charter boats. I also had a smaller offshore capable boat at one time, so I was knew well what it took to catch fish offshore. I was fishing for a swordfish off the florida keys with two days of charter fishing - ten hour fishing days. Did not have a bite the first day. Halfway through the second ten hour day had not had a bite and the conversation had run the gamut from politics to trapping. I had some confusion over tipping one time while fishing in Cabo and decided to ask this captain about it. The captain said 15 to 20 percent with the higher amount if it was a successful day fishing. Of course, the mate could hear everything we said and the bulk of the tip goes to the mate. I told the captain I disagreed - that I tipped mainly based upon effort of the mate - and a little of the capt. I said in most cases - the mate’s job is easier if the fish are biting. A mate works much harder if the fish arent biting. Changing baits, adjusting lines, catching fresh baits, clearing weeds - etc. The capt went back to the tip should be based more on fish caught - and the mate jumped in and said it should be based more on mate effort - some days the fish just dont bite. The discussion escalated almost to argument point. The capt asked why did I even ask that question - you could tell it aggravated him. The conversation was muted the rest of the day. I did get a bite with five minutes left before heading in and caught my fish.

I was sitting in a saloon/restaurant the other night and there was 3 guys drinking some beers next to me. One guy mentioned that when on vacation he likes to tip well. When they left the bartender was ecstatic that they had tipped her $40. A little while later that guy came back and got a beer to take to his room, tipped her another $20. That made her day. I only tipped her $10 for my $30 bill but hey, I live here and that’s my usual.

When I was younger I took a date to a fancy restaurant. The waiter made a couple smart comments trying to be funny. He saw “the look” on my face, then he said “oh, you’ve probably never had a smart Alec for a waiter before.” I said “well not for a full meal”. My date almost spit her water out laughing. He was a perfect gentleman after that and I tipped him well.

If you write it on your bill they must report it that’s why I give them cash to do as they wish.

Some of the busy Greek restaurants in Chicago take a percentage of the tips the servers get that’s ticks me off.

If you pay with a card the employer is required to keep track of it and it gets reported. And why I tip with cash.

Iam not going to tip any different then i did before.iam not sure how it works now with minimum wage if they have to report tips to the employer and then they have to make up any difference to make sure they make minimum wage per hour.i know some places they throw all the tips in a jar and split it between them after there shift is over.my daughter used to waitress years ago and made excellent money in tips. The one post above about tipping on a percentage of the cost of the meal is how I've always done it but it does make you think if you get served a 10.00 hamburger or a 40.00 steak the service should be the same but you leave more of tip for the steak.

The government has their fingers in everybody’s pie they rake in billions in taxes everyday all they want is more and more. How much of what they already get is wasted that never benefits the US directly?

The wife hit a major on a slot machine for $1150 if she would have hit for a jackpot for $1200 the tax is 28% on the winnings the last I heard.

What about when wages hit $15 or 20 an hour for the help? Will that change how you tip?

Tips for me have always been per service never on the tab of the total bill, regardless of the place that say's no tipping except for what is noted on the menu, those places I never go back to again and still tip for service and how it was handled !

Work my younger days as a dish washer in several places, seen what the service was like and how it got tipped for and even heard it from the girls and ladies doing it, those days' one never seen a male server, not a one of them said it was about the dinner it was always about attitude and promptness with serving !1

Won't ever change with me !
