My old AM/FM radio in the shop only gets static on AM now. Looking for a decent replacement but most new ones don’t have very good AM reception. Anyone have experience with a new good one?

Before you do much more, take it outside away from anything and see if the static clears up. You may have something shorting out to create the static.

The older ones are typically the better ones. Newer manufacturers don't put much into it. The broadcast companies/industry (FM) actually lobby against AM in general. (so do other entities that HATE talk radio) The best Am I ever had here was a Bose. It was hands down the best by far. Hi $$$.$$ though. (I borrowed it) Dittos for Rush ! Clay and Buck aint to shabby, but aint close either. I get the best AM in the automobiles. The antenna and ground plane is better. I even put an automotive type of antenna on my tin shed roof, rand the coax to auto radio on a shelf by my workbench with a 12VDC power supply. It works better on AM than any standard plug in the wall radio/CD/tape player kinda thing. Other than the Bose, of course.
I used to listen to AM but don't get great reception where I am now. And only one station comes in half okay for the local country station, and it's all that hip hop country garbage anyways.
Sometimes we get radio shows from the states they tune in later at night.
I have a CCrane radio, get decent AM in the workshop. Tho at times it has static. I usually mess with the antenna, rotate the radio and it might clear up. if not I move it to another outlet.

Can you stream your radio station of choice and use Bluetooth on your phone to a portable Bluetooth speaker? My shop is all metal and that's all we can do to get anything clear but a couple real local stations that we don't like to listen to.
Man I still listen to some news stations AM radio when I drive iinto work in mornings. AM has the best game coverage too with local announcers that have been doing it for years and they get all excited over big plays. I am going to get one for my garage too. Thanks for starting this thread, good ideas everyone. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I still use my old AM radio in the shop. I have a roll of thin steel wire attached to the antenna and it works pretty good, even with my LED lights. For whatever reason, my battery chargers really screw up reception, pretty much completely wipe it out when a battery is charging.
I do use a Bluetooth speaker and stream a lot of podcasts and other stuff when my AM talk shows aren’t on.
I use the am radio on my iPhone and in my truck and through my computer, when working and driving. I used to listen to NPR in the morning and then Rush Limbaugh in the afternoon, I miss listening to Rush . I want to hear both sides of the conversation and make up my own mind.
The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

Should of saved yourself some pain and just listened to Rush. You'd eventually hear their take on the story on Rush's shoe or Glenn's if they had a worthwhile take. If not ever covered the story.. I used to do the same thing until the 2008 election.
Rush was the best! Clay and Buck are okay, but would be better without Clay. Right now Jesse Kelly is my favorite. Sean Hannity is full of himself and very repetitive. Joe Paggs also has a great program.
I pretty much can't get any radio stations where I live so I listen off my laptop with an external speaker plugged in. I have to say though radio stations that are worth listening to are few and far between. I end up listening to mostly podcasts and audio books while I work in the shop.
Took 2 guys to replace Rush, and they both fall short, they're ok, but you can't replace "El Rushbo" I only listen to AM while driving, rarely listen to music either, there's a country station available but this new crap is unlistenable
There are several Rush replacements and none of them even come close. What most forget was Rush was first and foremost an entertainer. He said so many times. He started early in life as a maverick music DJ on local radio. He took all that and folded it into a talk show. Yes his was a conservative message, but presented in an entertaining way you went out of your way to hear it. Even the liberals. All the replacements just stick to the politics. They all got their start somewhere else. They don't have this kind of entertainment talent in them.

Have you checked your antenna? Take a roll of covered wire and hook it to the antenna and throw the roll of wire over the shop roof. All of you guys ought to try that. just
