Because Bruce... SEVERAL means a few, some... NOT seven. Saying several means 7 absolutely, is the same as saying some means exactly 4, or awhile is precisely 20 minutes... it makes no sense whatsoever. Just because the two words begin with the same three letters, does not mean they are the same word! It's common sense, man!

I hunt in Maine and know many from there. Most all are decent folks. At camp they do complain that I won’t shoot the first buck I see. I just refuse to do it to make my best friend mad.

ChatGPT said:

Short answer:
“Several hundred” is a vague, approximate amount, while “seven hundred” is a specific number (700).

In more detail:

Several hundred

Not exact

Usually means more than a couple, but not too many — often interpreted as 300–900, depending on context

Example: “There were several hundred people at the event.” (Maybe 300, maybe 500; you don’t know exactly.)

Seven hundred

Exact

Means 700, no more, no less

Example: “There were seven hundred people at the event.” (Exactly 700.)

If you want, I can also explain “a few hundred,” “a couple hundred,” or “hundreds.”

So why not say 300 to 500 people? Why say seven hundred? That sounds stupid to me.

Angela, the few people I have met from Maine did all call themselves maniacs. They did things a little bit differently from the rest of us. The one guy was convinced that once he put in his 2 weeks notice, if he did anything that was the least bit, potentially dangerous, he was going to get killed, or at least horribly maimed, not mained, for life.
