Where I grew up, you needed to take a class to trap, but every town had them. I had to travel a whole 4 miles to take the class.

When I lived in IL, however, a class was also required.... but they were virtually non-existent... many kids needing to travel over 2 hours to get to one. My time in IL made me an opponent of mandatory trapper ed.....

Being a 4H trapping instructor of all of my students few show real potential to go on to become trappers on their own. Catch/sell is the priority with them putting up fur is of little interest then they discover them girls and the wheels come off of the cart!

Here the tail bounty of $10 a tail for nesting predators has stirred a lot of interest in “selling tails” but the kids still learn the skill at least many have moved on the coyotes and bobcats that are not on the bounty list. My hope is as they get older some will grow into serious trappers but many are in the 10-14 age when in the class but all are welcome that show up for the classes.

Most states I’ve been in have no license requirements for children up to the middle teens here in SD you don’t need a license to fish or trap on your own property I would think that would be common in the free states.

Just renewed my Outdoor and small game licence in Ontario. Licences are a tax. Then they charge a "goods and services tax" for issuing, so taxing a tax. I can't use the words here I want to.

License is actually a user fee. The fee is used to pay for wildlife management.

Any monies the state collects is a tax.

Without looking to double check I believe in MN a deer license for 10-12 years old is free, 13-17 is $5.

"A user fee is a charge imposed by the government for the primary purpose of covering the cost of providing a service, directly raising funds from the people who benefit from the particular public good or service being provided. A user fee is not a tax, though some taxes may be labeled as user fees or closely resemble them."
