What kind of ham do you prefer? I, finally, found a decent ham (picnic ham). The name brand is "Frick's". It is just a salt/sugar cure from what I gather. Really, no sweetness at all, just mildly salty. Perfect, for my taste. I can't stand the brown sugar, maple or honey glazed hams. All that sweetness ruins it for me. And, it is terrible for making scalloped potatoes/ham or ham/bean soup with the leftovers. Anyway, I cooked this ham today and I am looking forward to using the bone and some leftover ham in split pea soup tomorrow.

I don’t like it sweet either .

For some reason I only like ham with eggs for special breakfasts. I don’t like it so much for dinner..

I've got a Frick's in the freezer right now.

The best we found around here is called a Tavern ham. A bone in ham, not sweet or salty. Just a good tasting ham.

If you’ve never done it, smoke one to 205 degrees and pull it like you would a pork butt.

Pre cooked / smoked from the store, smoke it at 225 until you hit 165 and then wrap in foil and finish to 205. DANG good.

Interesting! So you shred it like you would pulled pork?

Thielen meats in Pierz Mn makes a double smoked ham. Best ham I have ever had. Prepare like GUNNLEG describes. It will be the juiciest ham you will ever have.

Exactly like pulled pork except the taste… kinda gives ham a new spin. Especially with your favorite bbq rub to build a good crust.

When cooked in the oven I’ve never found much of a difference, but I’ll have to try smoking one.

Check out ‘smoked ham & Meat Church’ on YouTube. He lays it out pretty simple.
