My wife is already at work and I'm about to head out the door to get started. Farm life doesn't take off for holidays.

Who else on here has to work on Christmas and what do you do that makes it so you can't take the day off?

I am a farmer so I have to go feed the animals. I've got about 25 hogs to take care of at home plus a handful of steers, and about 1300 head of cattle to feed at the dairy where I work.
My wife is the bacteriologist in the lab at a dairy processing plant.

Neighbors are out of town hunting deer down south so I’m looking after their chickens and ducks and farm cats. I’ve worked more Christmas days than I haven’t over the years. I always let the folks with young kids or big get together celebrations take the day off if not I’m trapping not much for just sitting around.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Loading boiler fuel currently. Didn't want to work today or yesterday, but the pay is too good to pass up. [Linked Image]

Came in to works at 3am get off at 7pm. Did the same yesterday probably will tomorrow. Next day off is Monday. Did Christmas with my mom, wife's grandparents, and wife's dad on Tuesday when I got off from night shift in 3 visits. Wife and kids will go to her mom's today. Xmass at home will be on Tuesday since I dont work tell nights and my daughter will be off work as well.

With a homeschooling family and stay at home wife the schedule is flexible. So working when the pay is the highest makes since.

Packing orders all morningl in our facility. Then back to the house to prepare for dinner. Just cabbage rolls, fresh frozen garden sweet corn off the cob, mashed taters and gravy. Fruit cake for dessert. smile

A buddy is coming over for Christmas dinner with the wife and I at noon. Then the daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter are coming over later in the afternoon.

We have down sized on the critters so far less chores for the wife, chickens and a handful of goats. None for me now that the pigs are in the freezer. I want to do a couple small watercolor paintings as last minute gifts for neighbors but I don't consider that work

I use to way back, and new years Eve too. Like Sam said, the money was good.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I turned down double time for yesterday and today. Can't buy back time.

WI Outdoors, you are right about that. I'm setting here making real good money, but it definitely bothers me not being with the kids today. I'm happy for the extra money, but I don't believe I'll be doing this again.

The way I look at it for me is the extra money won't be enough to be life changing, so I don't need it........for you and all those working today. Merry Christmas. Some jobs are required to keep things running. Your sacrifices are appreciated.

Not working but might well be riding herd on this missus of mine. Spent the night with her grandmother in the hospital, 93/dementia/broken hip. We drove over yesterday got to go back today for work tommorrow. I swear this gal of mine is the absolute opposite of mission oriented while I'm a give me a schedule and stick to it type. She brings three bags for one night, me the clothes on my back and what can fit in my pockets. Me three hour drives matter, her I hate leaving.

Oh, and just informed that I'm expected to repeat this for Saturday and Sunday.

Power company guy was thankfully. Wind shorted a wire and left us with dim lights and no water. He showed up within a couple hours and fixed it in no time. Couldn’t thank him enough.
