In that device you hold, most of the knowledge of the world is at your fingertips. It's certainly not just a phone. Now what you do with that device is up to you. While the phone part can be a pain for some, it can also be a serious time saver and certainly has saved many lives.
As for technology as a whole, what we expose ourselves to is mostly up to the individual. Every time you enter your email address for this service or that, you subject yourself to unwanted solicitation. You can do without whatever it is you are signing up for that requests it, of course. However, email is how most businesses will communicate with you, and medical scheduling is pretty much an email or text affair also.
And as was pointed out to me many years ago, when I claimed I hated texting, it is intended for short messages, not long conversations, and it provides you with the ability to not respond or to even delete the conversation or contact for that matter. I find that very useful, myself.
As a whole, I love technology, but am computer-challenged, and sure get frustrated when something goes haywire, because I probably don't know how to fix it,
.

Just doing what I want now.

I googled how to not get any calls not in my contact list. Does not ring just goes directly to voicemail. Scammers rarely leave a voicemail.

Biggest problem I see is gaming. Don't see kids outside playing anymore when they have a snowday from school. Facebook has become a way of life.

Having said that the computer age also has a lot of plusses. One of them is that my cell phone has made my job much easier and more productive.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Just like any tool, it can be abused and there coniquences for abusing them.

Some individuals use statistics as a drunk man uses lamp-posts — for support rather than for illumination.
