I am wanting to put in a whole house water filter when I get hooked to rural water. I want to take out the chlorine and fluoride. I don't know what would be the best way to go. Any suggestions?

I have one in my house, it's in the crawl space

Had it for years and it's a pain to change the filter at my ability

Filters, depending on what you get get plugged in half the time on the package

Always wanted to put in a sediment tank before the tank

Just never did it

Buzzard I have a full basement and all the plumbing is exposed other then where it goes up to the faucet or shower. So it will be where I can get at it.

Make sure whoever installs the brackets for the filter if it's wall mounted installs it into a stud. Friend of mine had a contractor that used the stulid spring loaded things, ripped it off the wall first time he went to change it. Stud was 2" away.

Activated carbon filters are great for removing chlorine along with taste and odor. Unfortunately, activated carbon doesn't remove fluoride. Reverse Osmosis will remove fluoride but the membranes are typically not chlorine tolerant. You can use activated alumina cartridge filters to remove fluoride. I would go with a backwashable filter to remove sediment followed by the activated carbon and the activated alumina. I have used the Spin-Down Sediment Filter a couple of times on well water. There are a number of different brands of the backwashing sediment filters as well as the carbon and alumina filters. I did all of the plumbing work myself.

The basement has poured cement walls. I may bolt a 2x to the wall to mount it.

Whole home filters come in models that can backwash their self, that would be much more affordable and if you get a quality one it will do a good job. Just try to find a brand with high flow ratings, good availability, and reputable service. Charcoal does well, not sure if they are available with a backwash option though

I used tap cons to anchor a 2 x 4 to my basement wall and then installed a GE whole house filter for sediment and odor ….. it was recommended by my HVAC contractor to filter the water before it enters my boiler ….

MJM , if I were you I'd mount it REAL good. Over build it , overkill allowed. Sometimes the filter canisters can get locked up a bit. It takes a lot of torque to break it loose then. One 2X4 is not enough. Go beefy , build a very strong mount.

If you have a bladder tank, all of the backwashing filters need to be installed upstream of the tank as they use the pressure in the bladder tank to backwash. If you don't have a bladder tank (city water pressure) you will need a bypass line to supply pressure to the outlet side of the filters for backwashing. The bypass should be around all of the filters (or around each filter if you are really into plumbing) so that you work on the filters and still have water to the house. The backwash flush lines will need to be plumbed to a drain. Include a check valve in the flush line(s) so that what from the drain can't flow back towards the filters.

I am known for over building. So that should not be hard for me to do. No bladder tank here. I have a curb stop in the yard with a 2" line coming in and a 1 inch going from the curb stop into the basement.

Wouldn't a reverse osmosis system for a whole house waste a bunch of water? Most systems waste 3-5 gallons per gallon of clean water produced.

We use a whole house set up that gets a bunch of the garbage out, Pro Aqua or Aqua Pure, and then a tankless reverse osmosis deal under the sink for the drinking water.[img]http://[/img]

I looked at some whole house RO units and they are out of my price range. I don't really like the idea of a extra facet by the sink and pump to get water up to you. I had that type of set up once and it was more of a fight then gain. They say the water coming in is good. But I can't say I have much faith in what they say. I have a plumber coming Friday morning to put the meter in. It has to bee done by a licensed plumber. It must be above most peoples capability to hook up a pipe to each side of a meter.

What are your Test Results ?

I do not have the water hooked up yet. Friday is what I am told.
