About ten minutes until quitting time and I was singing the blues, “Ain’t nothing for the deer to eat in this field, Spittle (neighboring property) has them all spooked, they’re all up at Kerlin’s (neighboring property that feeds deer)…”

All of a sudden there stands a deer staring at me about 50 yards away. I had to be a statue for five minutes until it finally looked away. BOOM, I dropped it where it stood. I chambered another round. I glanced down to see where the empty brass would fall so I could retrieve it later. When I glanced up, there was a deer running up the field towards the woods from where I had just dropped one. I was pretty sure it was a second deer I hadn’t seen but I also thought it might be the one I dropped. It made the mistake of stopping right at the edge of the field. BOOM, I dropped that one in its tracks.

I got down out of my tree stand and after some searching in the 3 to 4 foot tall grass, I found the first deer. I laid my orange hat on it because it was getting pretty dark now and I walked to the top edge of the field and found the second deer.

I figured I’d better call my buddy Josh for some help so I did. At first, the call wouldn’t go through because I was getting that little satellite thingy but then it somehow grabbed LTE and a bar or two and the call went through. Josh’s wife answered and said Josh was outside and I was trying to explain to her that the call was going to drop, but she wasn’t getting it. I finally just blurted out, “I need Josh now.”

So she ran out and told him that. He thought I was having some sort of emergency. LOL

It took us about three or four calls to get the message across but I told him I had two deer down and to grab a skinning knife, a drag rope, a flashlight, and some warm clothing and to meet me in Tom’s back field.

By the time he got there, I had the first deer field dressed so he drug that one out while I field dressed the second one. My flashlight died about halfway through.

That makes three deer for this season.

Eh...wot?

No Mike, I’m in a special regulations area (WMU 5C), centerfires are legal here in the late season.

I called my granddaughter to tell her the news because she had been concerned about the fact that we only had one carcass to make scrapple with and it was from a buddy’s rifle season buck so we needed to give him at least half of the scrapple from it.

She was very pleased to hear that we will now have two of our own carcasses to make our usual 40 to 50 pounds of scrapple.

We are going to have a very large pile of clean bones this year. LOL

Eh...wot?

That is great! Good shooting on the 2 deer. Ant scrapple in the future?

Good shot placement on those 2. You'll be busy today in a good way. Congratulations.

Temps are going to be almost ideal for letting these two hang until next weekend Skippy, so that's the plan. I've already told my processers (youngest daughter and granddaughter) to pencil me in for next Saturday.

Eh...wot?

The high shoulder on the first one was to anchor it, I knew it would be hard to find if it lit out across that tall grass field and I didn't want to be searching in low light conditions.

The neck shot on the second one was all it offered. When it stopped at the edge of the field only it's head and neck were visible above the tall grass.

I prefer a heart shot and that's what kills most of my deer but sometimes you have adapt to the situations.

Nice going Lug!

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Sounds like a great hunt congratulations. Full freezers, barn full of hay, and huge stacks af fire wood are some of the best feelings.
