Just wondering if anybody uses their 330's for cats. Whether its in a box or a cubby.
Also would I be wrong for putting a foothold infront of the cubbies for either a shy cat or a second?
Thanks

To big to use in this state. Put a trap in front of what you are using for a cubby. Place stepping sticks down so the step right in the traps.

A foothold placed in front of the box and one either on the side of the box or behind the box, would be much more effective than a conibear. You can get them with 220's, but you'll have some refusals. If you use a conibear, put a wood plate on the trigger wires and bend them into the box. They seem to enter them better, and they fire the trap with their chin or chest.

MT Wolf trapper on YouTube just did a video on using 330's for cats. He checked w/ game warden and they say its legal. Interesting set. He hasn't posted about checking the line yet.

it seems like a pretty good set up where 330 are legal to use basically a running pole set

I have found where a 280 works better as it usually results in a neck strike. Conibear triggers are hard on the fairly delicate cat hide. Also, have the trap at the very front of the cubby with little to no recess and the trigger wires "leaning" a bit towards the outside of the cubby. In MT, as long as you are on private property all sizes of conibears are legal to be set on the ground.

you should always try to make a dogless set when possible even if its legal to do so setting a 330 on land is deadly for dogs even on private land the farmers dog even the neighbors could make you loose a prime location

I'm going to have to re-read the regs. I knew 110s, 120's and maybe 160's were legal on land but I thought anything bigger had to be submerged.

In the video he talked about 48 inches off the ground. And a phone call to the warden to check.

I saw that part. I’m sure he’s correct and 100% legal. I just didn’t realize that there were exceptions where a 330 could legally be placed above water in MT. That could be handy in certain situations.

My suggestion is to re read the trapping reg's and then talk to you're local game warden both , because our laws that FWP enforce are all interpretation by each game warden so there can be a variable on interpretation from one game warden to another .

Personally, I'd rather see you use either a foothold trap or a snare as the AR folks darn sure don't need any more idea's to try and outlaw trapping here in Montana .

With that said if you're still of the mind to try anyway I'd suggest a set back of the trap even if a guy on YouTube may or may not use one even if it's a elevated set as it's been that when I think something can't happen it will anyway just because it can .

You're friend along the snare line .

Definitely going to do that. GW’s have some interesting interpretations of the law.

I saw that video and thought it was interesting but I’m really wary about wolverines and lynx where I trap. Although legal I don’t think it would be a great idea where I am. I’d also be really Leary of a random person coming across a chest high 330 and just having to mess with it. But the way I read the MT regs it’s legal. I’ve just seen too many Alaska pics of Wolverine and lynx on leaning poles.

Yes, the reg's specifically say "Recessing Large Body grips on Land" ground sets using 7x7-inches or larger have to be recessed minimum 7 inches.
But I'm kinda double thinking of not using it though as mentioned above the thin skin on cats it's not that easy on them. Don't really want to damage it. Also I've been told there are a few wolverine above where I trap so don't really want to get that for an incidental..
Thanks
