We love a good supper club. The Del-Bar and Ishnala are both 20 minutes away. We also have Fields at The Wilderness and a few more, but the Del-Bar rules.

My parents owned a supper club for about my whole childhood and sold it a few years ago. I have had more old fashioneds then most of the country combined lol also made quite a few in my years or bartending at my parents supper club. We have a lot of them in our area where I grew up and where I live now. Probably close to 10 within within a twenty minute drive and we live in a fairly rural area.

I love a good supper club. So many have disappeared over the years. We have a few left around here. I can think of 8 that are gone in a 20-mile radius. A favorite of mine, Club 95 in Hixton was a great one for many years. Friday night fish, Saturday night Prime Rib are / were pretty standard. Brandy Old fashioned, or Southern Comfort Old fashioned are required for a good Wisconsin Supper club. I agree with Duckie1, Black Otter is great. They are known for their bone in prime rib. I love the sign at the hostess station that says, "if you have a reservation you're at the wrong place". They have an amazing salad bar. One of the few I know of that still have pickled herring on the salad bar. The good ones still have an owner that will come around and check on and talk with the guests. Overall, they are generally good/great food in a friendly atmosphere that is so much more personal and enjoyable than the chain type places. A lot of them are in unique buildings and offer some sort of history. I read about the fire that destroyed the Lake House Inn located in Edgerton 2 weeks ago. It was one of places that I wanted to try.

A supper club is a slightly more posh restaurant where you have to be a member, or the guest of a member, to eat there. They charge a membership fee. They are like a less restrictive country club, without all the amenities and activities. There were 2 near my college. My girlfriend and I tried to eat at one once and were refused. If I just paid the $240.00 membership fee, I could have joined and ate there that night. It sounded stupid to me then and still sounds stupid to me now. It's good for the restaurant, but not the customer, unless they are stupid enough to feel an ego boost from going to an "exclusive" restaurant that keeps people out, who don't want to pay a moderate fee for basically nothing. I later ate there with a friend and their parents. Their parents had bought a lifetime membership years before and moved out of the area. They said the decorations hadn't been changed in over 20 years. The inside looked 30 years out of date. There was bad cigarette smoke staining on all the fabric. Most of the customers inside were in their late sixties or older. The food was okay, but not great. The service was like a normal restaurant. It closed permanently within a couple of years of me eating there. Keith That sounds like the Elks Club that used to be around my area years ago. You had to be a member or guest of a member to eat there. Most of the members were older like you said. They went out of business years ago. I think mostly due to poor management. I don't know if there are any Elks Clubs around anymore.

So in Wisconsin, you don't have to join, or even pay a membership fee to eat at a supper club? I've only seen pay to join clubs in Ohio and not many of those.
How are they different than a restaurant then?
Keith Based on what im seeimg, they arent any different....just a non-chain privately owned restaurant..? I think them Cheesers just like to fancy things up with special names They are an experience. If you like good food and got time for a longer evening, I suggest finding a good one if you come to Wisconsin and treat yourself. Good drinks, with the meal to follow and finish it up with a good desert or ice cream drink like a grasshopper or pink squirrel. I usually get a ribeye or prime rib. They also usually start off with hot fresh bread on the table and cheese spreads on small toasted breads or crackers.
