Nice picture.Never seen that before

I’ve been seeing this cow elk below my house for a couple of weeks now. At first I thought she got her mane wet, and then it froze… and I figured it was just a temporary thing. And then I thought it must be a piece of garbage, like a grocery bag stuck around her head. Finally today I had time to get a good close look at her with my binoculars. It’s simply a white mane, it’s not all white, but more than half of her mane is white. I’m on my phone, so I can’t load bigger pictures. I have quite a few other pictures from my phone.

Has anybody ever seen anything like this?

Very cool, about 10 years ago a guy shot a cow elk that was completely grey. She was like a ghost in the woods. Quite a few people seen her before she got shot.

Do you have a season on Elk?

Yes we have an Elk season, there are about 40 tags available for the zone around my house, but I usually put in for a zone next-door which has more elk on public land, it also has about 40 tags available. I have 20 preference points, and haven’t gotten drawn yet. But I should soon.

She’s back. It almost looks like a different cow. But I assume it’s the same one from last year. I don’t remember any white splotches on her body last year!

That’s cool. If you showed that to a biologist, they would say that white is on the gular region, as “mane” is only on top of the neck.

Cool elk photo. We had a buck in our yard all summer that was that color. He had a large white patch between his eyes. Don't know if he made through deer season or not. Wasn't planning to shoot him if I saw him during deer season as he was a small 6 point. Never saw him. Was told he was what was known as a piebald deer.

Never have seen piebald elk before.
What I find interesting is the uniformity of elk. Very rarely do they exhibit non-typical characteristics.
