I never got into ice fishing probably because of trapping plus I always figured them fish will be there in the spring when it’s warmer. LOL I hear they are getting some nice size perch through the ice. 40 years ago the lake was a smelly shallow cattail swamp but since it flooded it cleaned up the water and they dumped a lot of fish in there several years ago.

At 5 degrees I just checked some traps filled the boiler walked the dogs and I’m comfortable in the Lazy-boy for now.

Law Dog- I heard your "lake" was quite the later season mallard honey hole when it was a slough. I never hunted it but people from here used to drive out there in the 1970s and probably the early '80s or whenever it filled up.

People from here used to drive a lot to "the River" to hunt Canadians before the state agency started to reintroduce the "Giants" on the east side counties. I suspect few people drive out to the River to hunt geese anymore.

I only did it a few times but the most memorable one was the time a friend of mine took me to a little piece of state bluff land in Sully County and we pass shot them. I had never had the experience of geese being below me coming up the hill but with a 30 mph tail wind pushing them. That was a wild day.

I've been doing more ice fishing than trapping this year, got a little burnt out after having to check traps in the dark after working all day. But I survived, and now I'm looking to do some more trapping again, probably start busting huts on the first warmish day this next week and see where it takes me.

Yes it was a cattail swamp 40 years ago knee deep lots of rat huts but it was closed to trapping to help control the muskrats. The water was not visible just miles of cattails so thick the “ lake “ caught fire a few times from lighting strikes. It’s considered a fast cycling lake, after the water came up the lake became toxic from all of the dead vegetation floating in it. Killed thousands of different waterfowl.

It had some serious flooding about 10 years ago that increased the depth greatly and cleaned up the bad water, it’s now planted with perch and walleye. Wife talked to a guy in Mitchell she asked if he was one of the guys out fishing on the lake he said no but he’s heard about it.

Law Dog- How deep to you think it is now..?

TheYouthTrapper- You actually have muskrat huts up there..? grin I haven't seen a hut in my county since 2020. I forgot how truly different now the northeast quadrant of SD is compared to the southeast. The past fall and this winter is almost as dry and open as was 2023/24. Enjoy your water!!

It’s gone down it was at my back door several years ago and is dropping slowly over the years. I’d say under 15 feet maybe it was never a deep lake but it covers several square miles. 15 feet is about 10 feet above the old average it had a lot fish kills in the past historically, tons of dead carp some years it had northern pike when I first moved here when I experienced the first die off not seen any pike since then.

Lose some of that depth and have some large amounts of snow and the perch will be the first to go belly up from lack of oxygen. Come get them while you can they report getting some nice ones.
