We don't have much for that thing you all call forest around here but we do have some trees. My off grid friend mostly buns wood for winter heating, all of it hardwood varieties.

I would think anything "dead standing" would burn but I suspect your dead standing pine would burn for sure compared to a dead but thick hardwood species.

The tree I cut was a dead gum. I didn’t realize how bad of shape it was in until it hit the ground and all the bark fell off of it. It cut pretty easy with the saw, next step will be running it through the splitter. I’ll post a short video of it once I get to it.

Dead pine pinion or juniper is like rocket fuel. A little smoky. Juniper pops and throws a lot of sparks. Wont burn a long time like hardwood but easy to light and produce a lot of heat.

I always heard you shouldn’t burn pine in a stove, outside of kindling, that is.

I guess if that’s all you have, it’s not a choice.

Standing dead elm around here is great firewood.
Standing dead ash, okay but nowhere near as good. And it doesn't stay standing long at all. Couple years and they seem to snap about 3 to 5 feet off the ground.
Never got to cut gum. We don't have those up here. Saw plenty when I was in Georgia.

I used to burn stuff called red devil if I remember correctly. Toss in a handful every morning. Burned with different colors. Helps keeps creosote from building up and causing a chimney fire. Would put sand in a gunny sack and run it up and down the chimney every year. Stove all closed up. Then take the stove pipe out side and clean it. Shovel the stove out. Messy job. If all you have for firewood is various pines or quakey's it needs done.

I like to bring inside a several day supply of wood as it is so dry in winter that you can humidify the house with it as it dries a little and cures a little…unless I have enough cured wood, then the pan of water on the stove is enough. Ten days supply all the time wood work fine here if you could stay ahead of it…with some types of wood.

When I drop dead standing I split and stack the top for burning first. A lot of the moisture is pulled down towards the trunk as it dries. You can tell when you get down to the “water line”. The wood cuts different and is much heavier.

I dropped a standing dead cottonwood yesterday, running the high stuff through the chimney right now.

U have a moisture tester? Hong Kong freight has them for cheap. Last c ouple weeks I cut firewood. Dead on ground trees were 25% standing were 18% or lower. Tops drier. Red oak.

Any wood will burn if you put enough heat to it. Creosote buildup is the main concern when burning any wood. I get funny looks when I tell people that I melt down pop cans in my wood burner but for me it really helps keeping the stovepipe clean. I burn 12 to 14mhours a day for at least 4 months and when the stove pipes cleaned out in the summer there's very, very little build up.

A dead standing tree will burn but still will have more moisture in the wood then a cut and dried wood. The old root system is still a source for moisture to get in to the tree itself. It will burn though.
As a carver those pieces will crack an be very hard to sculpture because the wood isn't dry.

Let’s do this, I’m gonna split a piece and take a measurement.

Take single guess what the reading will be and I’ll send a jar of lure to whoever is closest.
