Do you folks have and sell to local buyers or are auctions your only outlet?
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Thanks, I often wondered that.
Here we can do both with auctions mostly the more profitable but not always with the costs associated with selling direct through them.

Probably something for the garment makers to be able to present as evidence of humane treatment of the critters.

If the Russians are smart enough to monkey with other countries' elections, they can sure as heck figure out how to defeat sanctions.

Can someone explain what veterinary certification in fur sales means? It's not bribes, it's testing that all wild furs (and some other types of wild produce) must be subjected to prior to shipping or any transportatation between regions or internationally. To have your furs tested, you must bring them to any lab of the sanitary-epidemiological service (sanepidemstantsiya), which is a government authority that supervises, well, sanitary and epidemiological things, such as pests, vaccinations, food and water quality, etc. It currently costs around $8 to have one skin tested, I think. They test all skins for anthrax and for radionuclide contamination. So if one is a small-time trapper and only has a handful of skins, which is pretty common, bothering with these certifications is just not worth the hassle. Then there's also the Merkuriy, a federal system of barcoding and tracking for all agricultural produce in the broad sense, including furs (more taxes!), and it's also something that most trappers only have a vague idea about.

How do the US and Canada's pelts stand up to the Russian pelts quality wise?? Russian sable varies a whole lot from one section to another, a $300 average across the board is amazing, I don't know if I've ever seen it that high in years, if ever. The best section are the "Barguzin sable", they come from near Lake Baikal. What's interesting, in recent years anyway, is the large percentage of sable at the Ruspushnina sale that are labled "Barguzin". In some years the majority are labled as such, I'm pretty sure that is for marketing purposes. That means that a lot of those sable are not really Barguzin since that is a realativly rather small part of Siberia. A lot of those sable are imo, no better than some Alaska sections. However, there is value in the name "Barguzin". It will be interesting to see what American sable end up selling for. I've heard of a recent sale in Idaho where they averaged nearly $100, and that is for the M. Caurina variety, generally the least desirable of the North American marten.

We have local buyers (most of whom later sell the fur at the auctions) who offer much lower prices than one would get directly at the auctions, but the peculiarities of our harvest permit distribution system and auction requirements (including what's called veterinary certification) make it very complicated for trappers to sell their furs at the auctions, so the majority of trappers end up selling their furs locally. Sounds like "The harvest permit system" could be a way for bureaucrats to make money or some form of profit by handing out these permits. We have the same corruption in this country.
