If you have to pay the government to keep your property, you don't really own it. Ohio members, if you agree, you can sign the petition to end property tax in Ohio, so that the issue makes the ballot in November. Please go to: https://axohtax.com/to find locations in your county to sign the petition. Keith

We've been going back and forth on that issue in Pennsylvania for decades. It isn't ever going to happen.

I got a jibberish letter from the county accessor a few weeks ago keep in mind nothing taxable had changed here in the last 25 years all building on foundations were permitted. The jist of the letter was about occupied structures and that you were allowed one with an attached garage that made no sense as I have no attached garages on my house. I have no other occupied or livable structures other than the house we live in.
I have a 30X50 steel building and a 14X45 fur shed a couple moveable garden type barn looking lawn sheds and a 40 foot Storage container anything not on a foundation here is not taxable even the storage container.
The letter made no sense it appears to be more creative forced taxing nothing more the only real change is the way they will try to tax me now. The county here is just a personal power play for the commission that runs it they pick and choose what they enforce rule wise. A few of the old commission members are there for the insurance heck they can’t stay awake for a meeting and don’t participate they are there for the insurance nothing more.
This is what we deal with until the next election I will send a letter to the editor before the next go around time for some fresh horses.

In NC, our property tax drives our school funding. Over half of our collections are used for public schools.
Would you prefer to increase your Ohio sales taxes? A national sales tax scares me because I it might not be distributed back to the states equitably. I do favor many user taxes such as the tax on tobacco, alcohol, and gasoline, because I don’t consume many of those products now. Public schools are not very good either. So.....

Never gonna happen. Legislators love property taxes. Here’s why…..sales tax? ( consumers can reduce spending / tax collections go down ) income taxes? ( recessions come and go….unemployed folks pay less income taxes). But your property taxes….if you can’t pay them, someone else will gladly pick up the tab ( and take ownership of your property )
It’s guaranteed revenue, in good times and bad. Well said. The legislature here has talked about "property tax reform" for 2 years, and this year might do something. I'm sure it will be something like "we took steps to make sure your property tax will not go up as fast as it used to" ....and expect the people to be happy about it.

It won't happen. Remember when it was illegal to gamble? Then the state lottery came about to help pay for schools, and lower property taxes. Still waiting on that to happen. Last I knew the lottery money went to the general fund. Then the lottery expanded to , who knows how many games? Still needed more money for schools every few years, seems more like every year. Sales tax were raised by .5 percent , then went up again a few years later. Then it was legal to bet on sports. The state brought in over a billion the first year.
Remember you have to pay taxes on whatever you win. The government will never have enough tax money the way they waste it, and get kickbacks on what's spent.

If you are going to eliminate property taxes you better find another funding source for counties, schools, etc that use it as a source of revenue. Sounds easy, but in reality it is generally just a tax shift. I'd encourage all of you to serve on your local school board or county commission and educate yourself on the challenges they face just like the rest of us. A few years ago ,about 10, a superintendent of a local school retired @$250,000.00 a year. Decided to come back, and was paid $ 300,000.00 a year plus his retirement. That was around 10 years ago. I wonder how much they make a year now? Are they really worth that much? While they program our children to be liberals? They don't teach shop class or home economics anymore. They don't even teach history or math anymore. Wonder what the science classes are like anymore. They keep replacing buildings every 30-40 years, and building them like a mansion. I can't help but to think there's an awful lot of waste going on. No different than any government run entity. Seems like kids know less after going to school than they learned at home.

The state of Ohio came up with 66 million dollars to help build a football stadium. The owners should foot the WHOLE bill. Why should any of my tax money.. There's a lot of schools being built on the tax payers dollars that aren't needed. The schools are just glorified day care centers now a day. Many, many are running 10 to 12 different so called sport programs on my tax money. If you want Billy or Sally to play,,,,, the parents should be the ones handing outt there money, not me and thousands like me. I'm not stupid and I know the state and local governments need money but they spend every penny they can get and then some. Our county thinks building traffic circles are the answer to all the traffic troubles when a simple traffic light or lights would do the same thing. It's got to end. Say what you want, but there taxing a lot of both old and young people right out of there homes. And for the lack of better words,, THAT'S the bottom line.

So what’s the trade off? If you cut off one source of tax revenue the state will need something to replace it. Can never just be a pure elimination. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

The original plan in in Pennsylvania was to eliminate property tax and shift it to sales tax The sales tax would have gone from 6% to 7.4%. Also, food and clothing, which are currently not subject to sales tax, would have been taxed.
Feasibility studies showed this plan would be more than enough to fund the state's public education system. School taxes are the bulk of our property taxes.
I was greatly in favor of this change. It would have taken the burden of supporting our schools off the shoulders of property owners and shifted it to a system where everybody who bought goods in PA, would help support our schools. It's a much broader tax base.
It would also give people a bit more control by limiting items they buy to stay within a budget. Under the current system that big tax bill comes every year no matter what. Nothing I can do about it.
The state educators union blocked it time and again via their paid-for politicians (mostly democrats) in our state house and senate.
They are never going to give up that cash cow. Millions of dollars annually and no real accountability on how it is spent. I could write a whole page on the financial abuses inflicted on PA property owners by school boards.
Eh...wot?

To add to my last post,, There's a number of states that do not have property taxes. how do they do it?? Where we used to live they built a new high school. Believe it or not, they even had a big room with putting greens in it for the golf team. Ya, take my taxes and spend it on schools. OK ,, I'm done... Can you name the states that have no property tax? First I ever head that.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Alaska has no property tax, nor does Oregon. Those are left to the county or borough. I think that's the way most states work AV. Here in PA there are no "state" property taxes, they are levied by the school district, the county, your local municipality, etc.
