For perspective, in spring of 2023 that same grade was $40 and all us beaver guys were so happy we could hardly sit down. By spring of 2024 it was starting to cool off a bit and blanket gd dmg were all going at $32.

Wish my crystal ball could tell us what's up with that market.

Catch a bunch of everything, something should be worth something by end of season. Miss the old days when you got told what was worth what BEFORE the season started, now you just have to wait till next spring after season has ended to find out whatever you caught is worth.

Another blip in the market. My confidence is not high in seeing those prices again next spring.

Gotta live up to the nickname...

It is weird, but it depends on the web browser you use. It is top of the list when you click on sold catalog under the buyers heading when you use a browser it likes. Not Brave or Safari.

Could be. It seems when they think inventory is starting to run low they go out and buy like crazy. For it to have jumped from $16 to $43 in less than a year must mean something? Looking at the sold catalog there is no variation in prices from XXL down. It would appear that one buyer bought all the hatters.

But who was pushing him/her? What valuations did FHA have on them?

Stay tuned for another chapter of "How the Hatter Market Turns". Next installment June 2026!

Beaver may the most fluctuating item in the fur market. I've trapped in Beaver country since the early 90's and can't recall two up years in a row.

I hope it stays high until the June sale. I've got a dozen "hatter quality spring beaver headed to FHA.

We will see. I've been asked to meet with the Furbearer coordinator to go over maps and interpretations before the June Game Commission meeting that sets the regs for the next two years.

Interpretations will be very important to how it all plays out.

I would think you'll do fine Lugnut. Would be hard to believe that a $27 bump (XXL size) would be one and done within 3 months.

So is the hatter market sold by the pound?

When the garment buyers show up in the room,it drives up the basis (top grades) due to all the competitive bidding.
When the top grades sell high every other grade below will follow that basis.
When the hatters cant scoop the top grades for the prices they can pay then they have to get what they need further down in the catalog.Thats why you see bigger prices paid for the bottom stuff too at certain auctions.
Right now the garment market is hot for a lot of fur including sheared as well as the silky dark straight haird good early northern beaver.

That sounds about right Boco. I didn't get to hear the beaver part of the podcast (and I don't know if it's still out there somewhere on You Tube) but it would be interesting to see where the bidding started on the gd dmg grades.

UPDATE:

OK, I found the YOU TUBE video for day 2 and listened to the hatter section. They started out the blanket hatters at $25 and had at least 5 active bidders from what I could tell. Right before the hammer went down the price edged up two more times and that guy got I think eight lots in the string@ $43. Then the next lots got bid up to $43 as well and it appeared the same buyer got those. At which the auctioneer under his breath says : "That was interesting".

Then the XL, L's and LM's apparently went to a different bidder. XL's @ $38. It looked like there were four bidders going against each other.
