The wind direction dose matter somewhat but a high pressure system will slow down the fish biting. The wind out of the east just go fish the west side of the lake. A far better thing to follow is the moon charts. Day in day out there far more acratic then wind direction. BUT,, the very best time to go fishing is whenever you get a chance. With todays depth/fish finders it's almost impossible not to catch some fish.

I charter fish on Lake Erie. If I didn't fish east winds at times I wouldn't fish much. I wouldn't let wind direction determine if I was going to fish or not. With that being said East wind normally not always means stronger winds and rain/snow. Which is the biggest factor on whether I fish or not with any wind direction.

When the wind blows from the east, humans think the least.

Fish still eat - change location, tactics, and presentation.

A bunch of starving walleyes just coming off the spawn and the wind doesn't bother the bite so much. They close the the walleye season here for 3 months around the spawn because they are more suseptible to over harvest. I think it's bull, but I didn't make the rules.

Not fish related, but similar. I had read that bird dogs had problems scenting birds on east winds. Had a decent beagle, no world champion but good. Took him out on a east wind. Jumped a bunny and he tracked it about 10 feet and lost the track. Well sometimes that happens. A little while longer I stepped on a rabbit. It let out a squall and took off. Same thing happened again. I got to believe there was plenty of scent there. Made me a believer in the east wind being bad.

Bottom line - the best time to go fishing is when you can.

Agreed! I’ve caught fish on East and North winds but not my favorite. Ya gotta fish when you can fish!

I've had my best fishing just before and when a storm just hits.

Once I was wade fishing when the wind whipped up suddenly, within 10 minutes it started raining then lightning.
A sudden summer squall.
I caught one fish after another till I got nervous about standing around in a river waving a switch rod back and forth.
Went next to shore and cowered under a large tree on the bank.
After a short time the weather cleared, I went back to fishing and didn't catch a fish the rest of the time I was there.

I don't think wind direction has much to do with it, high, low pressures and sudden weather changes, now there is something there.

Dirty D, it might have been the noise. When I was a kid and the trains went by we caught fish and then they stopped biting right away. These weren't fancy fish, but to us they were all we had to fish for.....jk

This morning I fished a lake and 4 ponds. Nothing. But the water temp is only 52° so I just gotta be patient. The prairie chicken are booming and turkeys are gobbling so its close. Even saw a hen pheasant today. Thats rare. I seen in the paper that pheasants were introduced here 100 years ago. They flourished and now they are rare.

Fish will always bite. You just need location lure selection and presentation.
