I am looking for a new scope to put on my AR 6.5 Grendel and the prism scopes look like they would be perfect…just about. Most prism scopes come in 1x, 3x, or 5x and as the majority of my shots will be 100 yards or less at hogs and various other critters, the 3x will be just right. My only issue is the reticles on these scopes. They have very busy sight pictures. Most have ballistic reticles that have aim points out to 600 yards, plus windage aim points. Who is using low fixed power scopes to shoot 600 yards? And what is with the illuminated horseshoe or semi circle? What function does that play? Does anyone have one of these they use for hunting or know of a one that has a cleaner sight picture?

I'd be looking for a different brand of scope.

I use a Vortex spitfire on a 9mm carbine. It has a dot , with 2 circles around it . Lighted it has red or green reticle , or you can leave it turned off and the reticle is etched in the glass . Works very well for me .

Is there a practical purpose for the two circles?

The thought behind the reticle is for primary Close Quarter Battle use with the secondary ability the to reach out for the long shot.

The horse shoe acts as a big red dot plaster and blast, some reticles have the horse shoe sized for leading a running target, use the edge. Then the center vertical will have your bdc and some have ranging as well. Most all will be specced for M855 5.56 green tip ball trajectory but other cartridges may be close enough for government work.

I know the Primary Arms ACSS reticles have ranging hashmarks based on subtension of standard 18" width or standard 5'8" height of human combatants. For critters do some math and see what fits.

So does any company make a hunting reticle? I (and most people in the market for one of these) are not going to be shooting a 5’8” human combatant. I’m shooting a hog at 70 yards. I need one aiming point to minimize confusion.

Not sure but on prisms but I know there are basic red dots that are dot only.

The ACOG, pricey, is rather simple.



The Primary Arms Cyclops 1x has great reviews as the best budget prism and is basically a red dot at 1x. They say it was designed to be able to be paired up with a flip to the side magnifier to use the ranging bit though some say it kind fidgety getting two scopes into perfect coaligned focus.

Dot does fine aiming, circles m well , for fast shooting i can just put the circles around a man size target at 50 yards and dump a mag in center as fast as I can pull the trigger . Mine is a 1x , the 3x has a little different reticle , but not nearly as cluttered up as many of them .

Acog is battle tested but very pricey, I currently have a primary arms which works great for about a quarter of the price of the Trijicon Acog. I love prism sights, because I used them I the military. It’s what I am used too. Prism sights are good if you have an astigmatism too.

To me astigmatism is the big deal in favor of prisms. I have pretty bad astigmatism and dots aren't clear for me. I see a fuzzy dot. Anything other than a large dot is pretty much useless to me, no use having horseshoes multiple dots, etc. Best I can do is center the blur and bang.
