Does anyone have one and can you tell me what you think of it. How long of burns do you get out of it? I am looking at a 2500sf model.

I`ve been using mine for over 30 years. It`s a real monster I guess. Replace the door gaskets every few years. I don`t know the model # of mine, but it has 2 doors. split in the middle. A few years ago I was having a smoking problem and I thought it was leaking somewhere around the pipe. Turns out in the back left corner there was actually a gap between the back plate and the top plate. Enough of the weld got worn away from heat and rust, then I went in with the wire brush scouring the joint and I was kind of surprised at the size of the gap. Maybe 3/16". The welder just floated the gap, but it eventually wore through. I think I paid like$175 for it about 40 years ago and it will definitely outlast me except maybe for a direct hit from a 500 pounder or something.

Bought one off Craigslist for $70 about 20 years ago.
It was worth it!
Although, it was in a shed out in a muddy field, couldn't get the truck real close, and I was by myself,lol.

Had an Ashley wood cook.stove at one point as well, but sold it before using it.

My dad had one years ago, it was a good stove. Had an automatic damper on the air intake.

Ashley has gone down hill over the years. Now their steel is Chinese and they have become less than they used to be. Drolet makes great budget stoves, made in Canada and are way better quality than Ashley.

Mark, I have owned Ashley cabinate/circulator type stoves for nearly 40 years. I had one in the house as our main heat source and one out in my taxidermy shop. I love them. I have the size that can take a 24 inch log (model number unknown).There is no problem holding a fire overnight as long as the gasket is in good shape. I never used the electric blower on any of my stoves (they all had a thermostatic senor that would kick on when the stove got going good.......instead, I used a ceiling fan installed above the stove. It/they were much quieter than the stove's fan. My old farmhouse is around 1500 sq ft, and my shop just under 1000 sq ft. I have mainly propane in the house now because of my health preventing me from cutting wood. I'd go back to all wood heat in a heartbeat if I could cut wood. It is WAY more comfortable heat.

I noticed the same thing with Quadra-Fire stoves. I have an old one from the 90's that is a great stove, been heating my home with it for at least twenty years now.

I liked it so much I bought another used one for my camp. It's about fifteen years newer than the one at home but the exact same model. The first thing I noticed was that it was about 50 lbs. lighter than the older stove. Still a good stove just not the top quality of the older one.

I would not buy a new one with the Automatic Combustion Control and no doubt even lighter steel. I'll stick with the old ones.

Canada has been supplying a lot of our steel and its light-years better tahn the crap thats came in from China. I would pick a Canada made stove with Canadian steel over an American made out of Chinese steel. Infact my outdoor wood burner is made in Winkler Manitoba. So I put my money where my mouth is.

. Anyway some food for thought as to not just where its made but what its made out of coming from. Canada had good metal.

I kept and ran an an Ashley airtight for years as secondary heat but then replaced it with a pellet stove.
Ashley was great, no problems. On cold days I could fill it up before I left for work, turn it to it's low setting, (cut off the air) and there would still be good fire in it when I got home.
It would have a tendency to creosote up when ran choked down like that. They do smoke and don't make as clean a burn when the air is shut down.

EPA got involved in wood stoves a few years ago sometime during the Obama years and the new(er) ones are not allowed to be as airtight as the older ones were.
Old Ashley was rusting through and I was looking to replace it. Went looking at the newer models and they had limited the amount that the stove could be shut down to keep it from smoking when shut down. That's when I went over to a pellet stove.

Yeah, but can ya still fit into them! I've still got my one of my old class A uniform hanging in the closet but that 32" waist is a might too confining.

That's what I was referring to above when I mention Automatic Combustion Control (ACC). I think most newer wood stoves sold in the US have to have it.

When the stove cools down the air intake automatically increases and it burns hotter. It really limits burn times. I won't own one with that feature.

I have a buck 30 yrs Old had to put door lever been great stove only heat we use.

We had one growing up,I used up two of them in the 90s and early 2000s…tamarak burns hot enough to eventually warp the door and compromise the tight seal. Great stove if you keep your firebrick maintained.

I’m sure they’ve seriously improved them in the last 50 years but I replaced a crap-load of Ashley’s back in the late 70’s-early 80’s during the 1st big energy crunch in my part of Michigan. They were a cheap woodburner of the time and not air-tight so they burnt hotter than (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) and needed reloading far sooner than an airtight. I built 52 quality air-tight woodburners(free-standers, furnaces, & boilers) during those years and replaced many Ashleys, I personally know of 4 of mine that are still being used near me after almost 50years but I built stoves for folks clear across the State! Lots of chimney fires during that period were blamed on the Ashleys because folks would throttle’em/chocked’em down so literally smoldering, many using soft wood so they were building creosote and when they wanted serious heat at night, they would open them up and the creosote would flash fire. FAFO when you have a chimney with cracks or you burnt softwood in that era and many folks found that they had an upside down rocket engine in their chimney by golly!
