This board has some history behind it. A used car dealer in our church bought an old Ford truck that had sat since the 1970s. Under the bed he found three stretcher boards and gave them to me. 2 of the boards were in terrible condition, but this one was usable. All three were homemade out of old barn wood. The wood itself was probably cut in the late 1800s. I took the patina off one side, laid my pattern, and turned this old board into a nice picture. [Linked Image]

Also interested in what you guys think a piece like this is worth. In the future I will use newer basswood or pine boards. I spent about 10 hours total on this.

Very nice!!! I have know idea what it would be worth but art can be crazy high or crazy low. I can tell you from art work that I have done that where you show your work makes a difference on sales and price.

I do carving and have many all over the US. I get 250 to 350$ for a large carving but when you figure my time you would starve to death at the price per hour. I do it because of purpose and the love of passing on a piece of my work.

Looks wicked!
Did you use templates to burn it in?
Price is tough, between $50-$2000 depending on who made it, where, and who’s at the auction…..lol

I have to agree with Snowy. Time and place will make all the difference. Even if you price your time at 10 dollars and hour getting 100 dollars for your work would be iffy. It's the labor of love that you put into it that counts.

Really nice work, I like that a lot.

Price is tough, as has been said. To make ay decent money selling art, you need to have/find the clientele that will pay for it.

Yeah, I figured the pricing would be difficult. I really do just do it because I enjoy it; I just wanted to get some ideas.

I got a pattern and laid it down with carbon paper, then burned everything and added the shading. I did all the burning with one, fine-tip head.

Make sure you sign and date it. At one of the antique show/craft fairs in Ohio, you could probably get $200.00 for it, if you set up with it and other similar art. At those, how you come across, matters probably more than the art. If you can sit there working on another piece, where people see the process, you will make more.

Taking requests will net you more too.

Keith
