I'm happy about it. Shot one out today with my pellet gun. (season opened June first. Oak tree in my yard)Stayed treed probably 5 minutes while I noticed then loaded and pumped up the pellet rifle. (old 20 caliber Sheridan blue streak.) He is a decent bird dog. Pretty much ignores everything else when bird hunting. I hope to change that. I'm sure he will still find and point birds. I like squirrel. I'm going to keep encouraging him.

LOL. Sometimes dogs surprise you. My grandfather said that the best pheasant dog he ever had was a redbone hound.

Many old lines of cur/feist had a shot of bird dog in the mix to improve winding ability.

The more squirrels you shoot out to him the more he will tree em. Not bad if you don’t mind squirrel dog may not be best if you want a dedicated bird dog. Sometimes they can do both well but not always. I’ve had coonhounds that would night tree squirrels and day tree coon

Had a female blue heeler that was an excellent tracker for wounded deer, but she would not bark once she found the deer. She would come about half way back to me a wait, then take me to the deer, sometimes. Other times she stayed with the deer and I had to find her. She was great in briar thickets.

I had a Great Pyrenees cross with a traveling salesman (bird dog?) she pointed quail and pheasant treed squirrel, fetched them long with rabbits and doves never ever saw her chase rabbits but she would fetch them, quite a sight to see her fetch doves you would only see a few feathers sticking out. I miss ole Apache, she was one of the best.

This dog retrieves doves. Gets antsy waiting on them to come in. Any bird that flys by he gets excited and wants me to shoot it.

That's pretty funny,
My dog now if she's in the house she can hear starling's on our feeder she'll go to the door so she can go run them off.

cool stuff. There have been several instances of english pointers and GSP's being bred into hound stock with the intent to improve the nose and biddability of hounds over the years. Don't believe it ever panned out well or caught on. Many dogs will sight tree, few will tree on scent alone, takes a specific set of genes but the potential exists in all dogs. Hounds have just been bred to enhance and promote that particular gene.

A good dog who has a strong prey drive, which it sounds like you have, will do about anything you encourage and praise him to do. They are generally far more capable than their (we) owners are lol..

enjoy that, squirrel hunting with a dog is a hoot.

My six month old small munsterlander is starting to tree squirrels. But they are a versatile hunting breed - they are supposed to hunt lots of critters.
