I was at the ranch today and chewed up the inside of a half log with the chainsaw. I will make a deeper dish and clean up the concave part of the log and place the scenting ingredients into it.

I picked up some apples and added some water in a 5 gallon bucket and let the heat and time work it's magic. I will stir in some vanilla and molasses at some point and let that work also.

I would like to see if something like this works. I will pack the stuff into a place I would like to try it out. here is the log I chewed up with saw.

Deer elk moose or any wildlife. I'll bury it level with ground and add as I go to see if anything stops to check it out. Experimenting.

My suspicion is that a bear is going to relieve you of your log. I could be wrong.

I wonder if you would be further ahead to dig a shallow depression and pour your attractant directly in the ground?

Not many bear around where I'm at. I do agree a hole would be best. I'm thinking if it was soaked into this log eventually a hole would be formed. A long pack in so won't be back very often so wood might hold smell longer is my madness. I'm not sure Sam but your idea is the best for sure.

Hmmm. Maybe drill a hole through it and stake it down with a Tbar? I mean I know that wouldn't stop a BEAR from taking it but might prevent something else from packing it off.

Good idea about pinning your log down. Are you going to run a camera by it?

I will run a few stakes through it and I will install a camera.

Hey you can get a compressed block with all those scents infused clearance at TS or walmart every Jan for around 6 bucks..... At 30-50 lbs no staking required.......Heck the even make one you can hang on a string or screw it to a tree. No chainsaw required. Gas is too high.
Or you a bottle of vanilla killa...Dan Fitzpatrick sold gallons of it in the 90's

just saying.

If I was hiking in a distance I would skip the stake. It will take a lot of stake to keep a bear that bites onto the wood and pull straight up to keep it there. What are the odds of a bear coming by where you plan on putting it. Make a couple of the scent logs at once. It is not like the bear is getting any thing.
