Does anyone know where to buy otter boards that are 8 inches wide and 6 feet long.

I traced out boards from an old board years ago, freehanded with the table saw and roughed them out with a power hand planer. And sanded to finish. First one was with a hand plane the day I needed it…

I made my own from 3/4"x8" and 3/4"x10". Ripped the 3/4"x10", (actually was only 9-1/4"), pine from our local lumber store. Ran a router around the edges and a quick session with a palm sander. I also free-handed the pattern using the FHA design for the desired taper. I made one wide board 7' long for the jumbo otter we had in southeast Alaska, and that one got the most use.

Just doing what I want now.

Made my own also. I prefer cedar to pine, much softer as it ages to put pins in. But my otter boards are pine because that is what I had on hand. If you have a router it is really nice to do the edges with, but you can round them with a sander if you don't have a router and they will work fine. I've done it both ways, depending on what tools I had on hand.

They are great boards, but unfortunately, Scott passed away a couple of years ago.

An 8" board doesn't meet FHA specs...

Gotta live up to the nickname...

I caught many otter in Alaska that I could have easily used 10" wide boards and still needed 2 belly wedges. Heck, I even used shovel handles.

Well after striking out on what i'm looking for being made by the industry I went into town today and bought a 2 by 10 6 feet long to make an otter board the way I want it. Bad part is that was the only board they had so I will check next trip in.

I had my neighbor make me some otter boards out of cypress using the FHA measurements. I get compliments on my pelts as the boards are perfect. I catch some huge male otters and the boards fit them perfectly.

I have hundreds of Basswood boards made to NAFA specs, including Otter in two sizes. Problem is the freight will likely exceed the price of the boards.
