….if you really want big brow tines … you’ve got to feed them a persimmon infused protein powder supplement mixed into genetically modified super corn

…. Then only let them breed the does with the biggest ears

… anything less than that you’re just wasting time and money

If you want to improve a herd, you do it by controlling whatever factors you can. The easiest way to do that in a wild population would be to control the bucks as that is the only factor that you can meaningfully assess. Even if the doe (which we have limited info on) has inferior genetics, breeding her to a superior quality buck will likely result in the offspring being better than her genetically. Over time this results in improving genetics in both the doe and buck populations. Would it be as productive as breeding the best bucks to the best does and culling the inferior ones? NO, but we have no way of doing that, do we. Your suggestion is basically saying its too hard so we will do nothing and complain about the results.

Its easier on the farm because we often know what we are working for on both ends but, guess what? We typically work with what we have, which means the cows we have get bred. Even the mediocre ones. then we bring in superior genetics on the sires side. Its no different as far as the strategy goes but easier because we have control over the whole population.

Dana I,

I'm not saying altering the genetics of a wild, free-ranging deer population "is too hard"....I'm saying IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

You're cattle-deer comparison is apples and oranges. Do your cows (the females) roam free over thousands or tens of thousands of acres? No....and you likely have a good idea or you probably know exactly the bloodline of those cows and you know the bull's bloodline. That tag or marking helps you keep up with that along with the controlled breeding....which cows to which bulls.....

You and I agree on one thing, though......we try to do what we can to improve the whitetails we have access to. Hunters manipulate the habitat to increase the deer that utilze the property and to increase the opportunity to kill 'em. Older bucks usually mostly have larger antlers so we hold off on shooting those young and "inferior racked" bucks. We cannot alter genetics in no way whatsoever using a bow or a rifle. It is a nice thought to think about deer like a cattle breeder, but it's laughable.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If that meets your goals and expectations that's great. That is how I mostly am. The thing that boggles my mind are the guys that preach about improving the herd but then only want to shoot the biggest bucks they can find. They are actively sabotaging their own stated goals. Genetics is the building block behind everything, nutrition, weather, predation, age, stress ect all impact growth and quality, but without genetics nothing is there for those factors to impact.

You keep posting stuff like this^^^^^and I keep finding we agree.

But, dont leave out the fact that you and 100 of your surrounding neighbors will never change the genetics in the deer in your area by shooting certain bucks. Just not possible.

A short read about altering wild deer genetics from the NDA (formerly QDMA) for those interested.

No...I'm not a biologist, but many of these folks are.

I hunt a property with a 7 point gene. Shot 7 or 8 7pointers from 1 1/2 to 4/plus. Biggest grossed 143 as a 7. Never dry crik running thru it. Mineral out every year. Never a change in point #s.

I guess the does will breed with anything?

They aren't programmed to breed with a proven mate?

Let's consider Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He had the genetics to be huge. Yes he did steroids, but genetics still has to be there.

He ate a ton of food. My analogy I tell people is if you want to build a big brick house, you have to have a lot of bricks. Less bricks=smaller house.

So because Ahnold had superior genetics and ate optimal and more than sufficient nutrition, he optimized his growth and development to it's full potential.

Now if he didn't have the genetics for large legs, he would never have gotten as developed as he was but he would still have been very strong and well developed. Just not as big and developed as he was in his prime.

If he had the genetics but ate Cheetohs and drank Pepsi all the time, he would not have developed the leg muscles he had to be a Mr. Olympia.

So in relation to deer, they have to have the genetics for brow tines first and foremost. Then there has to be the presence of superior nutrition for optimal development.

How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

HT,
I'd guess the buck with short brows is 4 years minimum. If I cover his antlers with my thumb amd look at just the body...I see some 5 year old + features in his blocky body.

The other buck is 3 year minimum. Covering his antlers in the pic...all I see are 3 year body features.

Yes....any buck that is there during her estrus peak.

No programming whatsoever. There are only so many mature bucks across the landscape. Even the so called "dominant" bucks cannot handle peak rut time (when most of the does in an area are ready.) So, a lot of that ripe fruit is picked by less aggressive, less mature bucks.

Putting together a movie from the video taken. Movement and such makes them look different. It’ll be a couple days before I can post it here.

I see this, too.

It takes hunting and being familiar with the same area over many years to pick up on this, but if you get to see what the neighbors are killing it does show itself.

High-racked 6 pointers show up repeatedly in my immediate area. Once they reach 4 year old+ they are respectable looking bucks that anyone would be happy to kill.

Deer camera pic angle makes it difficult to accurately guess ages.

I know for a fact that the 6pt on the right is 4 years old. The buck on the left is either 4 or 5 years old. I dont have the history with him in his early years to know for sure.

Sorry for the video button in the pic. It is a video that I screenshot.
