Here is a recap of round one. This was from last Saturday.

"Zim ran over a nest of yellow jackets with the mower yesterday. That, however, was not a happy dance. He was stung by dozens of them. One got stuck in his sock and got him numerous times before he was free. He was not feeling too good last night, but he felt that the sourdough was aiding in his recovery."

Nessy was encouraging me to take good care of him.

"I'm taking good care of him! I just went out on a very quiet reconnaissance mission to mark the yellow jacket nest. I hate to laugh, but it was obvious where Zim's lawn mowing pattern went off the deep end! I found the little demons, gently slipped a survey flag into their hole and quietly walked away. Hee. Hee. Hee. Zim's napalm mission begins tonight after dark. laugh

Here was my final report...

"Just thought I'd wrap up the hornet story by showing Zim's final word last night on the yellow jackets who pummeled him.

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh. grin

Time to go inside and enjoy another piece of sourdough toast with honey!"

============================================================================================================

Fast forward to yesterday. We have been watching clouds of yellow jackets still circling our jelly feeder, so we know there is another nest. GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

I saw a few articles that say to watch them and see which way they fly and that will tell you where their nest is. Sure, I thought. I stared them down for a while and I could swear that, as fast as they are, I saw four different yellow jackets leave the feeder, exit stage left and head downward at a 45 degree angle. (Our deck and feeders are about 12 feet off the ground.) So I projected a line in my mind and headed down there...and there was their hole with tons of activity. I went a got another survey flag and quietly slipped it in for Zim's attack later.

To be continued...

Swanson's chicken and 1/2 tsp of Taurus SC will kill them all within 1/4 mile if the fruit isn't ripe

Zim has my sincere condolences. Trapstickman can identify with his adventure.

I has some out earlier and it worked well.............until there were flowers, blossoms and apples everywhere. I have a can of it sitting under the apple tree where the ground is covered in apples and they won't touch it. They want sugar!

Patrice, I am glad Zim is ok. I have been stung 100's of times but I have had 2 reactions. It can happen any time without warning.

I have nothing clever to put here.

While the fire looks nice I have found that ground nests are better destroyed with a 1/2 cup of gas poured in the hole and not lit. Fumes get them all. I have lit the gas and found that sometimes the larvae survive and hatch out in a few days because as the fumes burn the heat goes up out of the hole.

Just spray around entrance with Wisdom TC and they track it in and wipe the colony out. I’ve had to eradicate three nests in the last week…they are busy this time of year

Rob, do you carry anything with you in case? Epipen? Glad you're okay!

I think he's going to wait until after we get a little rain tomorrow. Less chance of burning the house down!!!!!!!!!!!!

More to come!

I think I still have some epi-pens somewhere but they must be at least 10 years old, maybe older. I am terrified of needles. They gave me Benadryl the last time I had a reaction and I slept for 3 days straight. No thanks. I just try to avoid the little devils. When I worked out West it wasn't a matter of IF someone was going to get stung, it was who and how many times. I had a poor gal that worked for me step on a ground nest and they flew up her pant legs. She came out screaming and ripping her pants down. She probably got stung 20 or 30 times. She was a tough little runt.

I have nothing clever to put here.

This was my Hornet demise

Bald Faced Hornets [Linked Image]

I took an apple picker and put an old Folger's. Can in it the small can then I put a ball of twine in it? And lighter fluid, and it became a sixteen foot tiki torch

Patrice, I have to ask. Do you tuck all that hair of yours up under a hat when you go out messing with those hornets?? A few years ago a lady down the road got them all up in her hair while mowing her lawn. As a gag gift I received one of those plastic shotguns that shots course salt. I load it and my wife shoots them off of one of our hummingbird feeders. Had a body count of 9 yesterday.

No, Skippy. I just live life on the edge. That does sometimes cause big time regret at which time I adjust my behavior. laugh

Seriously, Eric, that's a good thought. I will sneak up on that original hole and check it out. Perhaps in order to more effectively eliminate all yellow jackets while maximizing the fun factor, we should first do the gasoline fill-up one night for eradication, and then come back the next night for a celebratory second fill and lighting! YES!

A guy I worked with claimed used crankcase oil worked best. He didn't burn it. He said just pour some in the hole. The yellow jackets get coated with it when they go in and out and it kills the whole nest. I never tried it but he swore by it.

I know burning them out can be fun and have done it out in the yard many times but...

Quite a few years ago I saw them coming and going from a little hole in our foundation. I went into the basement and could actually hear humming coming from the wall in one corner. Then I saw a couple of them crawling out from behind our electrical box. It was like a nightmare. I whacked quite a few of them then decided it was time to make the best move possible and posted here on Trapperman for help.

I think it was Drifter that told me to use Sevin Dust. I put some into a squeezable ketchup bottle and shot a bunch of it into their little entry hole from the outside. I made sure there was enough of the dust on their little "landing area" that they had to contact the dust if they were entering the hole. Kept at it through the day and the numbers seemed to be declining. The next day there was no activity and no sound coming from the foundation so I sealed the hole which was about the diameter of a pencil.
