I feel your pain too. I do work like I am 20 and sore for days after. One of these times I will do what you have done from not being in physical shape like I was in my 20's.
I wish you the best!

Your right about getting old isn't for the weak. Last week, pulling weeds of all things, I tore the tendon that works my little finger. Darn thing won't bend unless I bend it with my other hand. Bucked up a little bite of firewood yesterday and I'm feeling it this morning.

Better start doing some light calisthenics each morning and some stretching. It’s 20mins a day that will save you a bunch of pain and money.

I had both my shoulders tore up and both needed surgery to sew back up. Screws and mesh in them also. My surgeon said I had bone spurs and arthritis in both shoulders and that is the reason for most of the muscles tearing. When you move your arms all day long instead of the muscles sliding over a smooth bone .... you have bumps and spurs on the bone your muscles are being wore and tore thin in several spots and eventually tear all the way. Pretty common in older men who were very active in their life. My shoulders now get a little sore but at 70 years old I still do some pretty hard work and heavy lifting with them.

Rotator cuffs heal slower than many other tendons/ligaments and re-traumatize easily because it's a thin flat layer of fibrils.

Cook a beef shank together with the whole joint and the big tendon in a gallon of water for 6-8 hours with some salt, bay leaf and black pepper, and use the thick stock as a base for soups, or to make kholodets (I prefer the latter but I'm Russian). It's essentially concentrated collagen and aminoacids that are very bioaccessible and non-allergenic compared to other types of collagen, including gelatin and various supplements. And it's cheap and tasty. Eat it daily for at least a 2-3 weeks and take LOTS of vitamin C supplements (at least 100 mg daily, if you don't have stomach ulcer issues). Without the vitamin C, your body can't build its own collagen no matter how high in protein your diet is. My mom had a chronic rotator cuff injury with lots of pain and loss of mobility, and physiotherapy, prolonged steroid injections, bandages, etc. provided very little relief. She already had her surgery scheduled but we tried this as a last resort measure following advice from a lady who worked as a butcher at the local meat market. Surprisingly it helped very well, and the shoulder hasn't bothered her in over 15 years.

The rehab from rotator cuff surgery is no joke. Do everything they tell you to do. Best of luck to you !

I have experience with rotator cuff surgery. I have had five, three on my left side and two on my right (which probably needs another).

The repair of a damaged tendon requires cutting out the frayed portion and reconnecting the two ends. This stretches the tendon and thins it some. After several repairs, a tendon can become very thin. Surgeons can graft cadaver tendon when this occurs. During normal repair, rehab starts within a few days. With a graft, rehab is often delayed up to six weeks.

Think of your tendon as a larger rubber band. When you remove a portion and reattach the two sections, the band must be stretched, which thins it considerably. I doubt this tendon is ever as strong as it was before it was damaged. Just my opinion. After my third repair on my left side, the surgeon compared it to sewing pieces of wet tissue paper.

During physical therapy, you will probably be told to keep your thumbs pointing upward during your exercises. Years after surgery, a few exercises with the thumbs-up technique may provide some relief. I still do this several times per week to work out the "kinks".

Shoulder tendons have very little blood supply. Following the second surgery on a shoulder, my surgeon showed me a photo of a braided cord that was used years before to reattach my tendon to a dissolvable screw placed in a bone. The screw dissolved, but the cord was still in there. I was surprised that it was still like new, and not stained at all.
