Spent the day albacore fishing with a guy that works some for me and his kids. They had never tuna fished. Was pretty funny, I asked them if they had been ocean fishing before , yep salmon. Ok so you guys are pretty tough then - yep ! We ran out on a pretty nice ocean, our albacore are way offshore. I decided let’s give it a try at 42 miles , showing them the way I want the spread out and only have the third rod of 5 being let out when the first goes off. Fish on. Well that one about whooped the older boy. Get back to going and get all 5 out this time and fish on. Little brothers turn. Dad had to help him a bit. All I could think is you guys said you were tough. Next dads turn 5 minutes in and he gets one to the boat. Then doubles, had two quads , four fish on- your on your own. Was an absolute blast. The kids are now going to be ruined for most fishing, nothing fights like tuna, sure there is big game fishing but multiples where the whole boat is busy what a blast.

Albacore are a hoot. Went a few times and would go again if I hadn't turned ancient. 3 day trips with 8 guys. Filled the boat every trip. If any of you get the chance, DO IT! Aching arms and bloody decks.

Can't remember what kind of tuna I ate raw 40 years ago but it was great. Fresh, raw and chilled

If I went out, I'm pretty sure there would be 8-15 footers. I have never seen the Pacific that flat.
Looks like fun though.

Albacore is a white meat tuna, it’s good raw, seared and canned. Home canned is nothing like store bought.



Used to go old school with the compass, now modern electronics most boats have gps.

The tough part is the fuel bill, I only run a Yamaha 200. Can’t imagine the guys running twin 300’s or more.



This is just the boat not the truck to pull it there. Sure hope fuel gets better soon.

I had a 32 pound yellowfin swimming on its side somewhere off Mexico and took all I had to turn it and wore my arms out!

There's a guy lives on the cove where I crab, has a 30 something go fast boat, Pepto bismol pink by the way, with FIVE 300 hp outboards on the back, FIVE!
can't even imagine what it costs to feed that thing, course I've only seen it out once or maybe twice, lol

Yellowfin tuna has been hot all summer, enough that the price is in the toilet. Don't even need to run 40 miles...

I have caught all nine of the worlds billfish species. They just arent back breakers like tuna, except for in extreme cases like my 800 lb black marlin. Biggest yellowfin I have had on the rod was 130 lbs and it about killed my back. Of course, most of the bigger billfish are usually fought from a fighting chair. I have caught multiple 120/140 striped marlin on standup gear and a 20 min fight is reasonable. I think that 130 lb yellowfin tuna took an hour and 20 min on 30 wt tackle.

All the big jacks are good fighters too, amberjack and jack crevalle. The most exciting size marlin to fight are the 300-400 pounders, the bigger ones are just harder to pull in. Had some bulldog fights with big grouper too. to me the 20-30ish pound dolphin are the fun fish. Sailfish and wahoo just make one big run on light tackle, on normal 30 pound gear are pushovers. Haen't done any of that stuff in 50 years......jk

Having eaten many tuna, I know albacore is by far the best. Do albacore not swim with regular tuna? Do you find them in a different area than regular tuna?

Around here albacore school up mostly. We do see some small bluefin with them sometimes. From what I understand they are born near Japan and make a counter clockwise rotation, we start seeing them around late June /July. I hear the find them all the way up into BC, south Alaska on some years. These are 15-35 pounds mostly. Pretty young fish, not full of mercury. There has been a few guys trying to target big bluefins, they must have deep pockets to go out and troll day after day with nothing. Then once in a while they catch a 200 pound fish.

Look like a great time. The older I have got the more reserve I get. I dont think i would like being out that far and I would not want to hook into something that had any chance of pulling me overboard and would want to be hooked/tied off. Odd coming from a guy that would never tie off climbing on cell towers unless at my working spot or taking a break . Getting soft in my 40s I guess.

Our favorite fixin is a 5 or 6 pound chunk of fresh tuna grilled slowly in a foil tent/cover over charcoal and the juice smokes the meat better than in a smoker!

Just curious, What size on albacore run?.. From the pictures that looks like a VERY fast fish
