AR did what a lot of states do to try to reduce the spread - liberalize hunting season in an effort to reduce deer density. In spite of what might happen in WI and other states with liberalized seasons where deer densities remain high, the AR herd got wiped out. And I agree and have been saying it for years - AR low fawn recruitment is a a big part of the problem. The deer population can not absorb mortality when there are .4 fawns per doe like it can in WI where there are double that number

We recently had some new seasons added - most of them statewide that the AR state deer biologist advised against until we determine the cause of our low fawn recruitment. Our commissioners basically gave the biologists the finger and passed all of the new seasons. No doubt, coyotes play a hand in this, but other more northerly states have a lot of coyotes, also. We need to get our fawn recruitment problem figured out now that we know we cant harvest deer at the same rate in cwd zones as we do elsewhere.

I agree with Ted 100% on cwd.

So it was a bad idea for the state herd overall to reduce populations. I agree. By reducing the population you increase the effect of other form(s) of mortality and only make the problem worse.. With no decrease in auto density, predator density and newborn mortality, it only makes sense this would be a serious hit to the herd overall.

Stopping CWD is impossible if all we do is test for its presence. It is here for goodness sakes. We all know it and it's being broadcast all over.

If DNRs continue to test instead of diverting funding to science, the problem will only get worse (if it really is as bad as they tell us) and will start affecting DNR employment. And there is the rub. If they let the money go, then the money leaves. No matter what, it is ALWAYS about the money.

Spend the money intelligently and look for a cure or control or simply wait for natural immunity to start happening. Deleting the herd to a SAFE level will never work with an endemic disease. It will severely damage the herd to a level it will take a decade to recover from. Two steps forward and one step back each year.

Side question. Does AR have a coyote bounty? If not they are going to need one.

Imagine you are at war. Recon tells you the enemy is there and closing in. But instead of readying the troops and setting up an ambush or a flanking maneuver, you send out more recon.

That would be very stupid and self defeating. Let's not defeat ourselves.
