The punishment isn't to harsh with the exception of the loss of gun rights. This is how the leniency starts and ends up where there is no bail lol. So each team was being taken for 300.00 entry fee and up to another 120.00 on the side pots, losing the boat and truck got no problem with it at all. The deterrent for this behaviour going forwards is if your caught trying to steal 30k you loose 100k in vehicles.

I think the punishment was overkill. Felonies? Why not just bar them and fine them and be done with it?
What this makes me see is the inequality between cheating at this fish tournament and handing out felonies vs my drug dealer neighbor who is a convicted felon shouting up the neighborhood and NOT getting in trouble for that. Why slap the drug dealer on the wrist but burn the guys who cheated at the tournament? This is backwards to me.

They did not get away with it so stole nothing. Disqualify the cheaters and keep on with the tournament no one is out anything.
Then hammer them for fraud and any game laws thet were broken if any So the 300k they won in the last year was won fair and square? We can totally give these guys the benefit of the doubt right? I understand innocent until proven guilty, but it looks like before long you may see that guilt proven for past tournaments

The criminals who get off scot free are not pumped up on social media/news media....this was a worldwide story.

"multi-million" means anything over 1. so......im not a biologist, or a mathematician, but by my yooper hillbilly math, it dont take to too many wins in the hundred thou range to equal 1 mil. $28,000 in this event. You're not a mathematician for sure, at least you got that part right.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this event also determined team of the year (which the cheaters were leading) and if they won that title it was an additional prize. To the tune of a total purse of 40k if they won both the tournament and team of the year, which they would have if not caught in the act.

justice is blind and driven by politics.....been that way for a while, they have gone after many people just for being associated with Trump and now they are after Trump himself, very unprecedented and you folks are more worried about some hack fisherman kings...this is about the power of news media and then social media to set the tone for what is important.

I never thought I would read this and the majority would be saying the punishment is too harsh
I'd like to do a survey of their tournament competitors from the last few years and see if they think the punishment is too harsh
Ya know, the guys they stole from Let them handle this inhouse then. If you saw the video they are probably better off with what the state will give them than the beat down those old boys were about to recieve.

All depends on who's ox is getting gored. Illinois has seized boats and equipment used in commission of crimes for years as has the Federal guys.
If we were talking trap thieves bet there would be a lot fewer say it was too much.

Federal charges come from the amount of the property , if stolen or attempted to steal. Game charges , what game laws did the break? If they broke a game law , then fine them. From what I understand , the Sponsors took back everything that they provided for them to fish in Tournaments. Laws broken were civil ,so individuals would need to file charges , weather tournament officials or participants . That's my thoughts , might be wrong on things but a felony carries loss of gun rights , voting rights and causes problems in many different ways. Think it also depends on the felony , there's different types and degrees .From what I read , and not all of the reports , they were taught a lesson they will pay for for the rest of their lives. So depending on the degree of the felony , they may not lose their gun rights or voting rights . Just what I understand. I could be totally wrong , need James to give his point of view on this.

I thought a felony was a felony. So only certain degrees of felonies result in loosing guns, voting, loans, finding work etc??? IDK either.

Did the perps actually weigh the fish in or were they stopped and questioned right before they weighed them? Something very similar happened on the Crappie tournament tour a few years back. Well known contestant who placed or won every tournament, had pictures taken of him fishing a lake that was off limits during the tournament. When he showed up to weigh his bag of fish, he was given two choices. Take his fish and leave or weigh them in. If he chose to weigh them the law would be called and he would be arrested. He chose to just leave and was banned from all fishing tournaments for life. Never did see if these clowns weighed them before they were disqualified To my knowledge they weighed in and then got busted. They didn't receive the prize.
