For some of us--trapping is an addiction and a large part of our lives. One of my biggest fears is not being able to trap again.Hoping my new hip allows me to chase water rodents at least one more time.
Besides actually trapping,I also make beaver lure, snares and cable restraints--and I cannot wait till I heal enough to get back to doing all of those things.
More than once my wife has asked me ,if I ever talk about anything but trapping.

As much as time allows in season. I don't get paid but I also trap tens of 1000s of acres that no one else can access but the owner. Made countless connections through the trapping industry an reputation of being a trustworthy trapper. Finish what fur I see as profitable.

started to trap in the 70's in the catskill mountains, 14 and caught my first chimpmunk. Roamed the 40 acre wood up there with my remington one shot .22, flyrod and whatever traps I could muster up. Grandma (baba) cooked the trout up and showed me how to skin/butcher, those were the days...do some every season but I find lately that I can enjoy being outdoors without trapping/hunting/fishing. Hike, dispersed camp, canoe and etc. I like it here because trappers are mostly salt of the earth folks...mostly... smile

I don't think any Tman member will admit they don't really trap and are only here to troll and/or argue politics and/or bring us the gloom and doom news multiple times a day.

Although I strongly suspect some fit that description.

I started trapping muskrats at about eight-years-old. Back then (late sixties/early seventies) brown muskrat were selling for about $8.00 and black ones were selling for $12.00 or more. I was getting $3.00 a week for doing chores at home so I thought I was going to be rich!

I started a land line soon after and did well on skunks, possums, weasels, the occasional coon and even more occasional fox.

I kept trapping into my early twenties and stopped when the bottom dropped out of the market in the late eighties.

Fast forward twenty or so years. I had my youngest daughter at camp for a deer hunt. The neighboring camp owner was a trapper and when we went to visit him one day my daughter was fascinated by the skins he had drying in his shed. she told me she wanted to trap. I geared up in a hurry and caught the end of that season. We ran a fox line around home in southeast PA for ten or so years, averaged about fifty reds a year. She grew up and went to college. I still run the fox line and I run a land line around camp most years. Just started getting into beaver the last three years.

My granddaughter is my current trapping partner.

Eh...wot?

Yes, work full time and trap before and after work. Only been doing it for 5-6 years now and started after I was voluntold I was going to start trapping and getting paid for it at a local plantation, lol. Got decent and requests started coming in. Got about 4 properties I trap and get paid to do it. Start in January and run through September or so hitting the properties twice a year. Most folks don’t want you running around during deer and quail season so Sept-Dec is my off time.

I trap, but not as much as I used to. I have not sold any fur for years. I donate most of my catches to Wilmington College's Biology Department. Much of the data for their study on the diseases and parasites carried by opossums in Ohio came from opossums I donated. I mostly trap opossums, raccoons, skunks and mink. I let red fox go.

Except for overseas military service and one winter when work was just too busy, every year since my first in 1967. Fur trapped as a kid then longlined for fur after military service, then federal trapper, and then back to private fur trapping with occasional depredation for state agencies and friends. Like most, body just won't allow for getting after it like when I was younger and will never have all the traps I currently own set at any one time. Except for a few sets on our own property usually break trapping into 1-2 week segments to allow time for fur handling and recuperation every winter now.

I never set a trap this past season. My Mother passed away on Nov. 6th, and I just didn't have it in me.
Took the wind right out of my sails. We'll get with it this next season though.

Set my first trap before I was 12. Now mostly just Canines. When I move back up to Wisconsin it will probably be more water sets especially in the Marshes. Right now I mainly just trap on my farm and some neighbor Farms. Used to trap on the elk River where Cathryns hubby traps some but I had problems with theft. Especially Culverts. I think the thief is in Jail for 15 years now. Still love Canines more.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.
