I have a few spots on some properties that the coyotes use mowed trails for travel. What's the best way to blend a flat set in mowed grass? I used dried grass clippings last year, just wondering what you all have used. I did try to break up the light colored patch with a few leaves here and there. Trapping will be in the fur season, so November time frame.

I get that, was just curious if there were any tricks to help with how green the surrounding grass is compared to stuff used to blend the set. I think I will try extending the blending out more this year, fading it into the grass.

I think an important consideration is How You Are Bedding Your Trap in the grass? Are you digging out a trap bed? If so...try pounding one in with your heavy hammer....then covering with cut up grass clippings. This tactic works well for me.

I cut the sod out for a trap bed, and bed the trap in the dirt. After sifting dirt over it, I would sprinkle grass clippings and let them cover most of the dirt patch and out onto the surrounding grass. I'll try pounding this year, if the ground is soft enough. Right now it'd be like pounding on asphalt.

I hate trying to blend in grass. I’ve gone to more blown out dirt patterns in grassy areas to look like something was digging even if not a dirt hole. Someone did mention to me taking an electric weedeater and blending by weedeating a swath of area around the set

X2 on pounding in the bed. If grass is tall brush it back away from the bed. Pound in an exact shape and size bed. Ideally slightly undersized so you can wedge it in tight.

Then "pinch" it in tight by hammering the sod back towards the trap. This gets you the smallest possible area to sift dirt back onto.

Just gather duff/material around the set area and use a thin layer of that. If it has been mowed there will inevitably be duff in the area. If the coloration is off pull up some green stuff and dice that up in there too. The pounding thing doesn't work here with my soil type. This is a pretty freshly mowed field but there is plenty of duff to collect for blending. Carry a pair of handheld garden shears to dice it up

Thanks guys. I'll give the pounded in beds a try. If that doesn't work, I'll blend out the set a bit more.

I for one. Love putting in sets in the sod. Carry a small shears with me and cut up grass for covering. Sure is alot simpler than putting in dirt I think.

Can you describe your process a little more? Are you pounding in trap beds? Only using clipped grass for covering?

Thanks.

Soil types will determine how well pounding works. Clays are about ideal, loose sand or gravel not so much.

We definitely have high clay soil here, on top of glacial till (rocks from gravel size to that ain't moving ever). I am going to play with pounding beds this summer, just to see how it works before season.

Nothing blends as natural as what's on site. Use pruning shears as mentioned previously. Dirt to cover then it doesn't take much local material to blend. I try to pick spots that are as bare of vegetation as possible to start with, less disturbance that way. Most places I can just grab a handful of fine half decomposed vegetation that is under heavier vegetation just sprinkle over trap bed or just use wisk broom to lightly move material from edge of bed over bed and that will do a nice job of blending. Grass clippings or hay brought with you just never look natural to me. Keep trap bed as small and tight as possible (only as big as trap) makes it much simpler. Most places here pounding in a trap bed is difficult so I normally carry a short handled round nose shovel to lift dirt for bed. Once u get a good feel for size of trap bed I can remove the right amount of dirt for a tight bed with one dig on each side of bed then pound in the rest if needed.

k snow, I think you are using the right covering. Just don't put too much or you will clog trap when fired.
I use a screen pan cover. With that, a heavy rain or light snow, wouldn't sage/depress haylage or clippings over pan. Using screen with haylage with give a natural, blended look which doesn't need re-made after an all-day rain.

Power company mows a tract of land near me in July or August.
I rake all I need, then at home I mow these cutting finer.

Here's blind set at bottom of incline using haylage (5 Fox in 7 days)

I do the same as what others have said. Countersink trap and pound inn. And use covering on site. Imo. Trapping in grass has alot alot of advantages. Usually flat set or blind sets

I like Zaggers bedding method, with fine hardware cloth on the pan, blend with clippings and natural vegetation.

Screen on the pan helps keep a thin layer of grass nice and flat on the pan. Pound the dirt in against the jaws like '' power bedding''
