Yes - thank you much all who served. You never can say it enough. I didnt serve, but my dad did. He was navy, on the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier in the pacific, WWII. The ship was nicknamed the Decrepit because it was in for repairs a lot form the torpedoes and kamikaze strikes she took. Below are some pics of the Intrepid during the Battle of Leyte Gulf - called the last great surface battle of the world.

First pic show a japanese kamikaze about to strike the Intrepid - lot of anti aircraft flak in air

Next pic is moment of impact

Last pic, after impact

Kamikaze pilots tried to destroy the deck so planes could not take off or land. My dad was a radio operator - knew morse code till the day he died. He said there were eight radio operator stations for redundancy during battle. He said after Leyte Gulf, there were only about half operable.

I hope to visit the Intrepid one day - it has been made a memorial in New York City. I would dread going to NYC

My dad kept a journal during ww2 days. He didn't serve as he was older with a family, but worked in the shipyards as a carpenter helping to rig ships up for duty.

His entry for Dec 16th 1941:

"Sunday before last, Dec 7th, the Japanese made a sudden treacherous attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, even while special Japanese envoys were carrying on peace talks with Roosevelt and our Secretary Hull. Since that time, aided by the suddeness and surprise of their attacks the Japanese have been doing quite well for themselves: The island of Guam is evidentally in their hands, Midway and Wake are holding off valiantly, but are expected to fall, the Philippines are suffering repeated attacks, HongKong & Singapore may be on the casualty list.

But wait. The Americans are just getting started! There'll be a turning of the tables, just as sure as America is now aroused, unified, and fighting!"

Thanks to all that served and will serve. We must not forget.

I had the honor today to be the speaker at a local Veteran's Day program at a local HS during their program. I took the opportunity to share with the attendees a history of the draft in the USA from 1776 to the present and ended my program discussing my personal experience being drafted and going to and coming home from Nam and how life was then and for many years after. I talked with a lot of veterans after the program during lunch and they shared their experiences as well.
